Sign marking the start of the Green route, at the junction of the D990 and Rue de la Vèze (diagonally to the right).
(S/E) Take the latter. When it joins the D990, cross the bridge over the Siniq and continue straight ahead, across a construction site, to reach a footpath. From here, head generally north-east.
(1) At the fork in the road, turn right and join a tarmac road (D401), which you follow to the left.
Just past a shed, opposite an electricity substation, turn right into the meadows via a ‘passadou’ (an open passage too narrow for cows). Follow the path alongside the trees, then cross a meadow towards the river.
(2) Cross the river over the stones ( see photo). A taut rope serves as a handrail, but it is best not to rely on it. This is the only slightly difficult section of the walk. On the other side, climb up a shaded path. View over the valley and Malbo in the distance.
(3) In the village of Nouvialle, take the tarmac road, first turning left then right (markings are faded as you cross the village). Head generally east.
(4) 300 m after the last house in the old village, at the sign for ‘Les Banous’, turn left along a cowshed onto a dirt track. The path passes to the right of a water reservoir. When the path joins a tarmac road (D57), turn left at a right angle onto a black dirt track. From here, a long, exposed stretch across the mountain pastures, heading north. Views of the Puy de Bâne (rounded peak) to the left.
(5) At a crossroads (near Roupons on the map), turn left at a right angle (west). 250 m further on, turn right downhill.
(6) 200 m further on, avoid a path that descends steeply to the left and continue down the valley to the right. You are now under the trees, heading north.
(7) Where the road turns sharply left, continue straight on over a small footbridge across a stream. Cross a meadow to join the tarmac road (D401) on the right.
(8) Ignore this and immediately take a dirt track that climbs steeply to the right. At the entrance to Malbo, take the tarmac road to the left and reach the church via a short detour to the right. On your return, continue to the right, pass the Town Hall and reach the bend to the right.
(9) Opposite, take a dirt track that descends steeply towards ‘La Francio’. Ignore the side paths on either side.
(10) Walk past the farm. Follow the tarmac road for a few metres, then head into the woods via a path that climbs to the left (not shown on the map). Steep climb through the deciduous trees. Here, follow the markings carefully: there are several changes of path, whilst maintaining a general southerly direction. On leaving the woods, continue across a meadow, along a wooded hedge on your left. At the end, turn left across the meadow.
In the village of Labro, join a tarmac road. From here, the route is in open country, heading south.
(11) On leaving the village, opposite the ‘Labro’ sign, turn right onto a dirt track leading towards a pine wood, which you will skirt to the right. The track crosses several others: ignore these and continue straight on.
(12) After crossing a meadow, the path becomes a little indistinct, then turns into a sunken track, bordered by dry stone walls, under beech trees. Gentle descent.
(13) At the far end of a field, join a dirt track, still heading due south. You’ll reach the fork from the outward journey.
(1) Return to the starting point by following the route in reverse as far as La Lacapelle-Barrès (S/E).
