From the Meuse Valley to the banks of the Meuse

Starting from Doulcon, you will discover the typical landscapes of the Meuse coast. A detour through the pretty village of Mont-devant-Sassey has some beautiful architectural surprises in store for you! You will then reach the village of Sassey-sur-Meuse via the coast before reaching Dun-sur-Meuse and then Doulcon via the towpath along the navigable Meuse. Passing through four municipalities: Dun-sur-Meuse, Doulcon, Mont-devant-Sassey and Sassey-sur-Meuse, you can start your walk from any of them. You can also split this walk to shorten it or avoid the forest during the hunting season.

Description of the walk

To get to Dun-sur-Meuse, take the RD 964 (Verdun-Sedan), then the D 998 to Doulcon. The tourist office is located at 7bis Rue de la Meuse near the lock. Free parking spaces are available.

Departure from the tourist office: park in Doulcon in the Rue de la Meuse car park.

(S/E) Leave the tourist office on the right towards Avenue de la Gare.

(1) Take this avenue on the left, then Rue du Chemin de Fer on the right

(2) When you reach the housing estate, continue right on Rue des Étangs, then Rue des Acacias. At the end, turn right and follow the D313 carefully to a crossroads.

(3) Leave the D313 and take the path opposite towards the forest, following the GRP® "Aux Marches de Meuse" trail.

(4) At the fork, with a choice of directions, continue left on the path leading to Mont-devant-Sassey via the forest path through the woods, or else head for Sassey-sur-Meuse, continuing straight ahead, remembering to turn right 200 metres further on. On both sides, the view opens up onto the village and the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Mont-devant-Sassey.

(5) At the viewpoint at the edge of the forest, head left towards Mont-devant-Sassey. Enter the village and pass in front of the town hall and wash house.

(6) When you reach Mont-devant-Sassey, turnleft ontoRue du Trou Claude Pierre (don't miss the bell foundry, the wash houses and the church in the village). At the end, continue along the path, then turn left onto Rue de la Rochelle.

(7) At the top of the hill, at an altitude of 270 metres, turn right onto the forest path to reach the memorial to the battle of August 1914.

(8) Descend to the right through the woods to the Church of Notre-Dame de Mont-devant-Sassey, where there is a picnic table and toilets below.

(9) Continue down to the village via the steps and cross it again, first turning right then left at the town hall. Then return to the crossroads you passed on the way out.

(6) Then go straight back up in the opposite direction and return to the crossroads with the view.

(5) Continue straight ahead. Leave the forest road and take the forest path on the left that leads to Sassey-sur-Meuse.

(10) In the village of Sassey, turn right onto Rue de l'Église. Follow it on the right, turn right then left and leave the village via the D30, the road that crosses the Meuse.

(11) Just after crossing the bridge over the canal, turn right and follow the towpath, which runs alongside the D964 for 300 metres before continuing peacefully along the navigable Meuse. Continue along the river to the "broken bridge".

(12) At the first "broken bridge", keep heading towards Dun-sur-Meuse. A strategic line that supplied the Maginot Line in 1939 passed over these bridges.

(13) Once you reach Dun-sur-Meuse, after the marina, take the footbridge over the Meuse on the right to join the D998 road and the initial intersection.

(1) Cross the road to return to the tourist office, located in the commune of Doulcon (S/E).

It was our mistake at the start (we relied too heavily on the map)... but there were signs for the country walking trail.
Beautiful scenery and a glimpse of history with the ruined bridges, perhaps not showcased enough.
Given the length of the final section along the Meuse, it would be possible to break it up by heading up to the old fortifications at Dun-sur-Meuse and its 14th-century church.
