From La Montade to Le Caban

A very beautiful Nordic walking route with no difficulty and wide tracks. A magnificent panorama of the entire Chaîne de l'Étoile and views of Allauch, Plan-de-Cuques, Marseille and its harbour.

Description of the walk

From Château-Gombert or Plan de Cuques, take Chemin de la Grave (La Montade district). Park at the end of the road by a gate and a firebreak track, where there are numerous parking spaces.

(S/E) Turn right at the gate onto Boulevard Anatole France, then left onto Chemin de Mimet. After a few bends and a steep climb, you will arrive at the start of the DFCI firebreak called Chemin de Caban. Follow this track northwards with the Pilon du Roi in your sights. Stay on the highest part and ignore all the paths to the left and right. Pass fire hydrant no. 632.

(1) At the fork after underground tank no. 128, keep left. You will arrive at a place called Caban, a large abandoned house used as a meeting point for hunters. Pass to the left of the house.

(2) At the Y-junction, keep left. The path descends, turns left then right to arrive at a hairpin bend at the bottom of the valley. Turn right onto the path that leads to the Sources des Cauvières.

(3) Visit the site, then turn back. Continue along the uphill track. You will come to a crossroads of tracks and paths (elevation 387).

(4) Continue left on the track, heading south. The track is straight and descends slightly to reach a Y-junction.

(5) Keep to the right and join the next trail on the right.

(6) Turn right, the track descends, turns left into a hollow valley, then alternates between left and right turns to reach a three-way junction (elevation 369).

(7) Continue left, heading south, passing fire hydrant no. 210. The descent then becomes steeper. Pass two hairpin bends to the left and then to the right, and follow the track to the bottom of the valley. Pass through the green gate and arrive at the car park (S/E).

As a guide: the author's time for this route was 2 hours 15 minutes (without a lunch break).

This route can be done in either direction, but it is preferable to follow the direction indicated in this guide for a more gradual elevation gain and, above all, to better admire the beauty of the panorama.

You can shorten this 2 km route by keeping to the left at (5) and then passing by cote 306.

A varied hike, well signposted. Not very busy on a cold, windy day.

We did this walk yesterday at midday, Sunday, after a very rainy Saturday!
It was very pleasant. The route is easy, with no difficulties. There is a steep climb at the start, but it is not technically difficult.
It took us 1 hour 40 minutes instead of 3 hours 20 minutes, but we walk fast.
Thank you for this discovery.

Today's hike took place under beautiful sunshine, with clear, mild weather and no fog or wind. After a light rain during the night, nature was beautiful, green and full of flowers... Magnificent landscapes bathed in contrasting light, it was just perfect! Thank you very much for this hiking idea, a total of three hours of walking at a leisurely pace with a one-hour picnic break in the middle. No difficulty on the route, which is made up of good tracks. It's nice to hike with your head up looking at the landscape rather than down at your feet to avoid tripping over the usual rocks on the trails in the region (which I love, by the way...). The climb at the beginning is steep but not very long. After this initial effort, the trail continues to climb gently and steadily to Le Caban, so you hardly notice it. After that, apart from two very short climbs at the top of the valleys, it's mostly flat and a long, easy descent to the finish point. It was great fun!

Hike completed on 8/05/2024, beautiful view of Marseille on a clear and sunny day. Please note that there is very little shade along the entire route. The first part to reach point 1 is quite steep. Apart from that, there are no major difficulties. The hike is advertised as taking 3 hours and 25 minutes, but I completed it in 2 hours and 45 minutes without really pushing myself, although I did not take any breaks.

An easy hike, except for a slight incline at the start, but very pleasant afterwards.

Please note that the trailhead is located on the road to the right of the gate (unfortunately, the street name is only indicated at the end of the road).
Otherwise, apart from the steep start, the rest of the walk is easy with few hikers encountered despite the bright sunshine - nice view of Marseille.

I did this route today, and I ended up going in the opposite direction without meaning to, but I don't regret it because the climb indicated in the itinerary is particularly steep!
It's a pleasant, easy route that can be completed in half a day. Beautiful views all around. Thank you for this suggestion.
