From La Clusaz to Lac des Confins and back via Bossonnet

A beautiful circular route around La Clusaz that allows you to discover the nearby mountain pastures. The first part takes place in the forest: ideal in summer because it is shaded, and in autumn because it is exposed to the sun's rays. At the edge of the forest, the view of the valley is breathtaking, with beautiful panoramas of Les Aravis and the village of La Clusaz.

Description of the walk

On leaving La Clusaz, take the D909 towards Saint-Jean-de-Sixt. Park in one of the few spaces available on the right-hand side of the road just after the trailhead at the "La Clusaz" signpost.

(S/E) Carefully return to the sign and follow the trail on the left, which begins with a flight of steps and climbs into the forest. Pass a trailhead on the right and continue climbing until you reach the Belvédère de la Perrière: view of La Clusaz and Beauregard.

(1) Continue towards Les Confins. Ignore the first path on the left and continue to a new fork.

(2) Continue straight ahead, reach an alpine chalet at Mouilles de la Perrière and continue towards Les Confins on the path along the mountainside.

(3) At the Plattuy d'en haut signpost, continue towards Les Confins in the same direction. Cross the hamlet of Les Frasses and reach a fork in the road.

(4) Continue left and pass several bus stops: Les Frasses and Le Margueron. Turn right before the houses at La Cluiseraz.

(5) Take the path on the right between two houses to reach the road running alongside Lac des Confins. Follow this road to the right for a few metres downhill, then take the path that climbs up to the left. Leave it very quickly by taking the path on the right: a wide path overlooking the road running alongside the Azureva building and the Hôtel Bellachat. Join a small tarmac road at Crêt Braffaz.

(6) Make a first turn right then left to take the narrow path between a few houses towards La Clusaz. This path will quickly be lined with stone blocks on the left and structured wood reserves on the right. Continue along it until you reach a dead end for cars, then take a small path to the left of the houses. This path joins the road connecting La Clusaz to Lac des Confins.

(7) Take the road downhill to the left and follow it carefully until you cross a stream: on the right is the access to the Balme chairlift. Then take the path on the left, which follows the stream and leads to the Notre-Dame des Neiges du Fernuy chapel.

(8) Follow the road to the left, which quickly turns into a path. Cross a small stream and continue along the path until you reach a dirt road.

(9) Walk uphill for a few metres to La Brove à la Fay, then leave the road and take the path on the left, which climbs towards Crêt du Merle. The path turns 90° to the right and continues at the same altitude until it joins the forest road.

(10) Follow this road, keeping in the same direction. Continue down this wide forest track, keeping straight ahead.

(11) Cross the ford over the Ruisseau du Var and continue straight ahead on the path that extends the forest road.

(12) At the alpine building, cut across the field (beginner's trail) to reach the Route des Confins at Bossonet: the GR® is interrupted by the Bossonnet four-season toboggan run. Continue to the left until you reach the first roundabout, then a second, much larger one, which marks the entrance to La Clusaz.

(13) Take the Grande Rue des Alpes on the right downhill. Continue to the next roundabout and stay on the same course, passing the cemetery on your right. Reach the Salon des Dames car park roundabout and carefully follow the road to the parking area (S/E).

Notes

Parking in La Clusaz

A few parking spaces at the start of the hike: please be very careful as the D909 is very busy. There are numerous car parks in the resort, which are paid during the season.

There are few water sources along the way.

From Lac des Confins: shuttle service available to return to La Clusaz (in season).

Worth a visit

Chapel of Notre-Dame des Neiges in Fernuy (8).

Wood-fired oven below the Bossonnet roundabout.

Well above Lac des Confins, on the way to Bombardellaz: the goat farm.
