Description of the walk

Start from Saint-Ronan Chapel (car park).

(S/E) From the car park, take the path leading off to the left (west). It crosses a reforested area dotted with five exercise stations.

(1) When you reach the road, take it to the left, join the main road, turn right towards the water tower then left. Cross the road then the village of Kerlaéron, ignoring the road branching off to the right. After the last houses, turn right (mountain bike signs) and follow a dirt track to the D784.

(2) Cross it carefully and follow the disused road on the left (take care).

(3) At a sign reading “Give way 50m ahead” marked VTT7, take the second dirt track on the right.

(4) Turn left onto a grassy track (crossed VTT sign), follow a field bordered by an embankment, then turn left again to go round a field (yellow marker). Then turn right, cross a track and pass in front of the village of Kermenguy.

(5) At the junction with another road, first turn right then left and continue along a track.

(6) At the next junction, turn right, leaving the village of Kermenguy on your right, and continue to the next junction at the very bottom of the valley. Look out for a sign indicating “Douarnenez 12kmGR®”.

Red and white markings

(7) Turn right again, passing behind the village of Kermenguy. This section may be muddy as it runs alongside a wetland. Join a tarmac road.

(8) Follow this to the left, turn right and pass through the hamlet of Kerveillérec.

(9) At the junction, follow the dirt track to the right. At the top, turn right onto the track.

(10) Take a sharp left before a group of wind turbines onto a wide track. Head down into the woods on a dirt track.

No signposting

(11) At the junction, head down to the right along a wide path through the undergrowth which continues as a dirt track (as you leave the woods, ignore a path branching off to the right).

(12) Turn left then right onto the tarmac road. Join the D784.

(2) Cross it and follow the route back the way you came, passing through Kerlaéron.

(1) Take the path on the left, going through the gate. For this part of the route, follow the signs marked in red by the Haut Pays Bigouden Community of Communes. Continue through the trees, ignoring a path branching off to the left, and carry on towards a clearing where there are interactive information boards. Head down to a footbridge crossing a marsh (no path shown on the map).

(13) At the red signpost marked "Landudec", head up the path opposite and turn right to reach the Kerlosquet road. This path forms a circular route. Cross the road and go round the property on the left. Then head back down towards the footbridge (red signpost "Plozévet").

(13) Cross the footbridge again and, at the other end, turn left, following the wetland. Climb the steps and take the path on the left which leads to the village of Trébrévan. Here, note a stone well and the area where Japanese knotweed is being treated. The path on the left leads to the car park.

(S/E) Once at the car park, take a return trip to the site of the chapel, the fountain and the sarcophagus (this return trip can just as easily be done at the start of the walk).

Notes

To return to the starting point:
In Plozévet, take the D784 towards Landudec-Quimper. On this road, after passing industrial buildings on the left (2 km from the village centre), at the end of a slightly downhill straight stretch, just as the bend begins, turn right towards the water tower (signposted for Chapelle Saint Ronan). On this track, which joins the Plozévet-Pouldreuzic road further on, take the second track on the left (unpaved); the car park is 200 metres away.

Please note: in the village of Trébrévan, there is an invasive plant (Asian knotweed) which we are trying to eradicate:
Do not touch!

Hello
Avoid this route in winter as it gets very muddy
Best done in dry weather
Following the storm on 2 November 2023, the section from 10 to 11 is no longer passable. Too many fallen and tangled trees
At No. 12, in front of the compost area, there are too many ruts.
Four years ago I did it in June – it was brilliant and we had a great time on the fitness trail with the group
And the beauty of the chapel site is a must-see.

The route is very wet and muddy at this time of year.
The paths through the fields are choked with mud, barely passable...
A river has practically formed between points 11 and 12.
It’s best to wait for dry weather to do this walk.
In the description, two points to correct:
- at point 3: there is a ‘give way’ sign 100m away, not 50m
- the sign for Douarnenez 12 km GR has disappeared, or at least we didn’t see it
Apart from St Ronan’s Chapel and its fountain, there aren’t really any points of interest on this walk

A lovely route, taking in the chapel, the stretch past the wind turbines and the beautiful wooded area. I got lost at number 12.

This comment applies only to the section of the route in the wooded area around the water catchment.
Luckily, we checked the overview map before setting off, and this map is available at two other locations.
It was, however, relatively easy to identify landmarks.

A very pleasant and relaxing route through this reforested area.
Very informative educational panels.

A very pleasant walk in the countryside: a peaceful setting around Saint-Ronan Chapel and its fountain, with a view of the wind turbines.

A few gaps in the details caused us some problems. We used the route description as well as the Visorando map.

Here are some notes that could be included in the description to make it easier to find your way around.
- At the start, specify that the path crosses a tree-planted area and is marked by exercise stations.
- (1) In the village of Kerlaéron, ignore the road that turns right + the marked MTB track.
-(4) Due to a lack of landmarks, we couldn’t find the grassy path and ended up near the first wind turbines, where we turned left along the edge of the field to rejoin the route (the power station served as a landmark, as did the pylons marked on the map).
- (7) Head down to the bottom of the path where you’ll find a sign saying “Douarnenez 12km GR”. From there, the path is marked by the red and white GR markings. (This section is a bit muddy as it runs alongside a wetland).
- (9) It is better to use the phrase “up ahead” rather than “further on”; moreover, this route is still marked with GR signs.
We had a bit of a struggle here near a small wood.
- (10) Specify the wide path that heads straight off diagonally (marked by a signpost) and is still marked with GR signs.

At (10), we didn’t continue towards (11) because a local we met advised against the section after (11), saying it was very muddy and, according to her, almost a stream in some winters.

I will certainly do this route again with my walking group.

I’m going to post three photos to illustrate the walk description: one of the Saint-Ronan Chapel and two of the wind turbines.

Thank you for this discovery.

Saint Ronan’s Chapel and the surrounding woods ’s definitely not to be missed,
the rest is rather unremarkable with quite a lot of tarmac
Thank you
