From Bastide d'Engras to Saint-Laurent-la-Vernède in the ochres

A very pretty, varied walk with no particular difficulties. A few short detours will allow you to discover the castle, 15th-century barris, wash house, etc. Not to mention the moving Harry Potter-esque cemetery at the Saint-Jean Chapel and the imposing Coucouvèze dolmen. All this amid the ochre colours that line much of the route. Some parts of the route follow tarmac roads, but these are relatively short and, above all, they are very small roads with hardly any traffic.

Description of the walk

Park in La Bastide-d'Engras just before the town hall, Place de l'Horloge.

(S/E) Head towards the castle via Rue de la Tour, arrive at the Place du Château car park and turn right onto Rue de la Paved Slanting Street to reach Saint-Jean Church.

(1) Continue left on Grand Rue, take the street on the right and then the one on the left (Chemin de Font Figuière).

(2) Leave the tarmac road and take the dirt track on the right that leads to the chapel.

(3) Leave the path on the left, continue straight ahead and head towards Saint-Jean Chapel.

(4) Retrace your steps.

(3) Take the small path that descends to the right and rejoin the Chemin de Font Figuière. Turn right and walk for about 50 metres.

(5) Leave the tarmac road and take the dirt track that descends to the left towards the wash house. Return to the tarmac road.

(6) Turn left. Continue straight ahead at the crossroads and you will come to a fork at the edge of a wooded area.

(7) Take the tarmac road on the right, which quickly turns into a dirt track. Go straight ahead at the 90° bend, follow the path that winds between the vineyards and reach a crossroads.

(8) Take the path on the left and begin a short climb to reach another crossroads. Continue on the left along the contour line and join the D144.

(9) Cross carefully and take the path opposite. Continue straight ahead at the crossroads and walk for about 600 m. Take a short detour to the right to admire an ochre outcrop.

(10) Turn around and rejoin the route on the right. You will reach a crossroads at a place called Bel-Air.

(11) Take the path on the right.

(12) Continue straight ahead at the crossroads and follow the small path that leads to the Coucouvèze Dolmen, located about 150 m to the right: be careful, as strangely, the dolmen is not signposted.

(13) Turn back.

(12) Turn left, cross the stream and follow the small path through the forest to reach a wider path at the Ladet bridge.

(14) Cross the bridge, turning left, and join the D24 at La Maisonnette. Make a short first turn right then left, crossing the road carefully to take Chemin de l'Ancienne Gare for 300 metres.

(15) Take the path on the left, pass a few vineyards, then enter the undergrowth.

(16) Follow the signposted "Chemin des Ocres" route on your left and rejoin the previously abandoned path, which is now tarmac. Take it on the left and join the D144.

(17) Turn left onto this road and enter the village of Saint-Laurent-la-Vernède. Continue to the junction with the D23.

(18) Cross it, then turn right onto Rue des Platanes. Turn left onto this road and continue to the town hall.

(19) Cross the fortified section (barris) on the left, next to Saint-Laurent Church. Exit and follow the small tarmac road called Chemin du Gourg Blanc. Continue straight ahead, skirting the edge of the wooded area, until you reach Chemin de la Tave at the pumping station.

(20) Turn right. At the end of the second hairpin bend, take Chemin de la Tave on the right until you reach the crossroads just before the D211.

(21) Take Rue du Château on the left, then the first street on the right. Turn left again onto Rue du Progrès, rejoin the D211 and follow it to the left until you reach the car park (S/E).

A few shops with irregular opening hours. If the car park at Place de l'Horloge is full, you can easily park nearby.

Worth a visit

The narrow streets of Bastide-d'Engras, Saint-Jean Chapel and its cemetery, the wash house, the Coucouvèze dolmen, the Chemin des Ocres, the barris of Saint-Laurent-la-Vernède.

A pleasant route, but unfortunately we did it after heavy rain, so it was very slippery. We'll do it again later in the season.

More challenging walk in winter (end of January 2026) after rainy weather. Slope near La Tave a little difficult. (There are the remains of a wooden staircase, which is rotten.)
