Description of the walk

Park near L’Isle-de-Noé Castle.

(S/E) On leaving the castle courtyard, turn right onto Avenue Georges Clémenceau, then left onto the D943 – take care.
Follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®653.

Cross the Grande Baïse bridge and, at the junction, turn left. At the bend in front of the nursery, follow the path that branches off to the left.

(1) Take this tarmac path, pass a wash house on your left, then follow the path that climbs to the right. Pass the Couget farm, continue to the next house where the path goes round the back of the house.

(2) Stay on this path until you reach the crossroads. Cross the road and take the stony path leading to the hamlet of Cadiran de Haut. Walk round the houses and, at the bend, take the path branching off to the right.

(3) Begin a short descent, pass through the courtyard of an old farm and continue to the junction with a tarmac road at the hamlet of Ménichet.

(4) Cross the road and keep to the path straight ahead; this is still theGR®653. The route alternates between ascents and descents until you reach a junction with a tarmac road.

(5) Take the road straight ahead; it leads to the farm. Cross a bridge over the Ruisseau de Barres, then, at the bend just before reaching the farm, take the path that climbs to the left. Continue along this path until it joins a tarmac track. Turn right onto this track until you reach the D943 county road.

(6) Cross the D943, walk past the municipal weighbridge and turn into Rue du Barry opposite, which leads to the centre of the village of Montesquiou.

(7) After visiting the village, head back up Rue du Barry and follow the same route as on the way there. You’ll reach the Ménichet crossroads.

Leave the red and white markings ofthe GR®653here.

(4) Take the road on the right until you reach the bend. Take the path that climbs up to the embankment of Lac du Lizet.

(8) Continue along this path, leaving the embankment path on your right. This path runs alongside the lake then veers left across the meadow towards the woods, where it becomes a footpath. Continue along this path, first uphill then downhill, until you reach a junction with a track.

(9) Turn left onto this track. Reach the edge of the woods. Turn left to reach a crossroads. Continue right, downhill. Reach the Cadiran de Haut crossroads.

(3) Turn right and follow the same route as on the way there to reach the car park at L’Isle-de-Noé Castle (S/E).

A lovely route, 95 per cent of which is through woods or idyllic footpaths. Very well signposted. The section running alongside the lake is magnificent, lined with broom that fills the air with its fragrance
However, my Garmin watch recorded an elevation gain of 433m

A peaceful walk through the Gers countryside; a lovely break at the picnic table near St Jacques in Montesquiou before heading back to L’Isle-de-Noë, with a moment of meditation on a bench by the lake (hoping to be able to return in a few weeks’ time when the orchids are in bloom… and the château’s restaurant reopens?)

A rolling, shaded country walk through traditional farmland.
Meet several pilgrims along the way and visit the picturesque village of Montesquiou.
A lovely finish on the embankment of the Lizet reservoir, where you can enjoy a very pleasant, peaceful break.
After walking alongside the lake, there’s a surprising climb through the woods, offering a completely different setting.
From time to time, you’ll catch a glimpse of the Pyrenees mountain range, where you can spot the Pic du Midi.
Thanks to the route planner for this lovely, well-maintained walk and the beautiful, well-organised car park at the château. Ly
