Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Survilliers-Fosses station.
- RER - Line D, on the section between Paris and Creil.
Take the only exit, on the side of platform 1 (Paris to Creil direction). If arriving in the opposite direction, platform 2, take the underpass.

No signposting

(S) On leaving the station, turn right. At the crossroads, ignore a yellow arrow pointing left and turn right. Cross the D922 at the pedestrian crossing and follow it to the right towards Survilliers. Take the bridge that crosses the railway tracks in two stages. At the first roundabout, continue straight ahead on the D922. At the second roundabout, keep going straight ahead and enter Survilliers via Rue de la Gare.

(1) Take the second left, Rue des Bégonias. Ignore two dead-end streets on the right; at the end of the street, turn right and follow the path alongside a field on your left. At the first houses on the left, the road curves to the right. At the Stop sign, follow a path to the left that enters a wood (chicane).

(2) Less than a hundred metres further on (metal barrier), turn right under a small archway. Three paths appear: take the middle one, which is poorly marked at the start but the only one shown on the map. Further on, a sign informs us that this is the Allée de la Porte du Serval. Continue straight on along the path, which has widened, and ignore the numerous side paths (which are not shown on the map either). Walk past a tennis court on your right and you will arrive at Survilliers Town Hall.

(3) Leave the building on your left (there’s a drinking fountain on the corner) and turn right to leave the park. Back on the road, first turn left then right to follow Rue du Château. At the stop sign (with the wayside shrine), turn right onto Rue Pasteur.

(4) Cross Rue d’Alsace-Lorraine, pass by the foot of the church and continue straight ahead. At the stop sign, cross Rue Jean-Jaurès and continue along a small street that goes round the Post Office on the left. After a metal barrier, turn left onto Rue Maréchal. At the end, turn left into a street that soon bends right (Place du Béguinage) and then left. Pass a chain; the tarmac gives way to a gravel path that descends slightly alongside a football stadium on the left.

(5) Pass under the A1 motorway bridge (damp section, very muddy in June 2018 following a long period of heavy storms). Go straight on along a narrow path that enters the woodland. Continue along a wider, uphill path and then, in open terrain, along a grassy path. At a T-junction, follow a good path to the right. Walk alongside a fenced-off woodland on your left, go through a gate and ignore a path on the left.

(6) Walk past a riding school on your left and continue along a small tarmac road. At the two Stop signs that appear in succession, continue straight ahead. At the third Stop sign, follow Rue de la Fontaine aux Chiens straight ahead and, immediately, turn right into Avenue des Joncs. Walk downhill and ignore all side paths; walk past a sports hall on your right.

Yellow markings

(7) When the road bends right towards the school (30 km/h zone), turn left onto a cycle path (open to pedestrians). Stay on this tarmac path, passing three ponds on your right in succession and continuing through a shaded area. Pass a metal barrier on your left, walk alongside a fourth pond and continue on the cycle path, which runs parallel to a road some distance away on your left. The path joins the road and forms its (wide) right-hand pavement.

(8) After a 30 km/h speed limit sign, turn left to cross the road at the marked crossing. Pass a chicane and follow a path that leads into the woodland. On your right, walk alongside a low wall then continue along the edge of the woods. At a T-junction, follow a gravel path to the left between the fields, with a few isolated trees on either side.

(9) At the next junction, turn right onto a wide gravel path. Pass through a metal gate, cross a small road, pass through another gate and continue between the fields.

No signposting

(10) At the next junction, where the path is barely marked, continue straight ahead, passing a solitary tree bearing a Yellow Cross on your right. Note a faded red and yellow arrow and, as you approach the TGV line, turn left onto a wide track. A narrow but welcome copse separates the track from the TGV line.

(11) After a steep climb, take the bridge on the right which crosses over the TGV line. Head straight on and downhill along a stony path. Pass a metal barrier and continue straight ahead for a few metres on the tarmac.

(12) At a pedestrian crossing and just before a car park, turn left, go past a chicane and take a footpath. Pass a green building on your right (indoor tennis court) then go between two football pitches. Follow the footpath, turning right then veering left. After a chicane, continue straight ahead along Rue des Églantiers. At the junction, turn right onto Avenue du Bois. At the roundabout, continue straight ahead along Rue des Clos (good pavement on the right-hand side) and pass a pond on your left.

(13) At the corner of a playground on the right and just before crossing a stream, go down a flight of steps on the right. Cross a lawn then follow a pond on the left (no path but walking on the grass is permitted). At the end of the pond, continue straight ahead and ignore a footbridge on the right.

(14) Cross the road, continue straight ahead on a gravel path and follow the River Biberonne on your right. Pass a school on your left, cross the river and follow it on your left. Ignore the first footbridge on the left and cross the river via the second footbridge. Cross a road and continue straight ahead along a gravel path. Cross the Biberonne again.

Yellow markings

As you leave the bridge, turn left and follow the river on your left. Pass a hairpin bend and emerge further on at Place des Échabots.

No markings

(15) Ignore the yellow arrow pointing left and go round the roundabout on the right. Cross Avenue du Moulin on the right-hand side and pass a bus stop. Immediately afterwards, turn right onto a path bordered by two hedges. At the end, turn left onto Rue des Marguerites, then right onto Rue des Bleuets. Walk through a residential area and cross Rue des Millepertuis on the left-hand side. When Rue des Bleuets turns left, turn right onto Sente de la Gentiane Champêtre, which starts between numbers 18 and 20. Pass a chicane and continue along Sente de la Parière.

Yellow markings

(16) At the end of the path (with boulders forming a chicane), follow a gravel track to the left reserved for agricultural vehicles. Cross the D26 (take care), continue along the track opposite and head down alongside a hedge on your right. Cross the Biberonne stream, immediately ignore a footbridge on the right and follow the fence of a pond on your right. Ignore a track branching off to the left (blue gate) and continue along the fence.

Green markings (very rare)

(17) At the corner of the fence, turn right (no arrow or marker here). Then turn left with the path (the Green Cross marks the entrance inside the fence). Pass the pond and continue due south. Go through a metal gate, cross the Biberonne again and rejoin the tarmac. Cross Rue Bergerette on the right-hand side and follow Rue du Bois. At the end, turn right then left onto the D26 towards Compans.

No signposting

(18) At the corner by the post office, temporarily leave the signposted route and take the footpath on the right which climbs towards the church. Pass the church façade and then the war memorial. Then turn left into a downhill street (old gate on the right, old well on the left).

Green signposting (very rare)

At the bottom, turn right onto Rue de l'Hermitage towards the Salle Georges Brassens and rejoin the signposting.

(19) At the crossroads, cross Rue des Ouches, go through a forest gate and follow a farm track with a hedge on the right-hand side. Ignore a path branching off to the left and continue straight ahead along the track, which has become narrower. Head south-east, alternating between hedgerows and fields. Pass a playground on the right, then go through a metal gate. At the crossroads immediately ahead, turn slightly left onto Rue des Rosiers. At the end, turn right onto Rue de Paris and walk past the castle and then the church on the left.

(20) Just past the town hall, turn left onto Rue des Tilleuls. The tarmac soon gives way to cobblestones; head downhill, ignoring a path on the right. Turn right onto the cobbled street; ignore a path on the right and cross the Biberonne for the last time. At the fork immediately ahead, turn left between the boulders (metal barrier on the right). Ignore a faint path on the right, step over an old electricity pole lying across the path and pass a manure heap on the right. Continue along the edge of the woods on your left.

(21) At the T-junction (no arrow or marker here), turn right (south-east) onto a gravel path between the fields. Descend into the hollow of a small valley, cross a stream and climb up the other side. Further on, ignore a path coming from the left and take the bridge over the N2. Continue south-east for about 600m, on a paved path with the bell tower of Thieux church in sight.

(22) Before reaching the first buildings, take a track to the left towards a solitary tree and some silos in the distance (no arrow or marker here). Pass by the foot of the tree, which turns out to be a walnut tree and bears a marker, and continue along a dirt track then onto a rough-paved surface. After an electricity pylon, at a junction (elevation 98), continue straight on along a track towards the silos.

(23) When the track turns right, veer left onto a grassy path, heading towards three trees spaced apart. When you reach the base of the middle tree, turn right. At the base of the next tree (marker 104), turn left. Follow the path, which further on makes a succession of two right-left bends. Pass under the high-voltage power lines and walk along the left-hand side of the fence belonging to a transport company. At the corner of the fence, ignore a path on the left and turn right towards the silos. Immediately afterwards, at a T-junction, turn left and walk along the trees on your right.

Unmarked

(24) Take the first path on the right and walk alongside a hedge on your left. The path gives way to tarmac and, at the junction immediately ahead, follow Rue du 19 mars 1962 to the right. At the end, turn left onto Rue Daniele Casanova. At the ‘give way’ sign, turn right. At the traffic lights, cross Avenue de la Gare and take the path that starts to the right of Rue de l’Europe. Then cross Rue Pasteur, leaving the coach station on your left, and you will arrive at Dammartin-Juilly-Saint-Mard station (E).

To return home:
- Transilien - Line K, towards Paris-Nord (use the underpass) or Crépy-en-Valois (direct access).
- TER - Line towards Paris-Nord or Laon.

Notes

Train timetables: see the Transilien website.

For motorists:
Arrange to have at least two vehicles, one in the car park at each of the two stations, which are on different lines. In Survilliers, it is also possible to park in the town hall car park on Rue de la Liberté (though space is limited), which allows you to avoid the very start of the route along busy roads; this alternative is around 2km shorter. With just one car, travelling to or from the start by train would require a change at Paris-Nord station.

Hiking boots required.

Water point at the foot of Survilliers Town Hall. The ponds at Saint-Witz, between (7) and (8), and the pond near (17) are ideal for a break or a picnic. Bar-restaurant on Rue Pasteur, opposite Dammartin-Juilly-Saint-Mard station (E).

Hikers should be aware that, depending on the flight paths taken, aircraft approaching or departing from Roissy Airport can be heard clearly.

A 1:25,000 map is required (at the very least the one accompanying this description).

Hike undertaken by the author on 9 June 2018.

Quite a nice and varied hike, but not enough forest and too many endless fields.
Crossing the villages is quite pleasant despite the planes flying 300 metres above the houses.
Can you really get used to living with all that noise?

A lovely walk through fields and small residential villages. The description is very accurate; I had no trouble following the route. Yes, there are planes as Roissy is very close by, but it didn’t bother me (what can you do about it anyway!); it adds to the atmosphere. As the comment below mentioned, I had my packed lunch at point 13. Long stretches in full sun, especially as there was plenty of it today. Thanks for sharing.

A lovely walk through fields, woods and villages. A pleasant day’s walk with no difficulty at all. The route description is spot on: you just need to follow the guide. Well done to the person who put this walk together! Definitely one to do again and again!

An easy walk under a mostly cloudy sky but on dry paths.
No aeroplanes, but the noise from the motorway and the N2 is very noticeable.
Much of the route is on tarmac or cobblestones, with a few unpleasant sections, such as after the motorway where the path has several areas covered in excrement and toilet paper, or on the path towards the bridge over the N2, which is lined with several piles of various materials.
A few comments:
- Point 2: the porch is much closer than indicated; I’d say about twenty metres
- Point 3: I didn’t see a water tap on the corner of the town hall, and Rue du Château is actually called Rue Cateau
- Point 12: the football pitch on the right no longer exists. It has been levelled and gravelled, and work is currently underway (a car park or an extension to the tennis courts?).
You can enjoy a pleasant break by the Moussy-le-Neuf pond (point 13), where there are plenty of benches.
