From Fescal to the Vilaine

North of La Roche-Bernard, the Vilaine has carved its bed into a rocky plateau, and the streams that join it have also settled in fairly steep valleys. The remains of windmills on the heights and watermills along the streams mark this route, which winds around the former estate of Fescal Castle. This route runs mainly through wooded areas, interspersed with wooded hedgerow landscapes.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Small car park on the RD148, near the old Moulin de Fescal.

Cross the main road and head up towards the hamlet of Téneurien. Continue along a sunken track that runs alongside the woods, then joins a small road.

(1) Turn right as you leave the woods, then head towards Fescal Castle along a lovely forest path (not shown on the IGN map).

(2) After the farm buildings, turn right, then leave the road to the left at the corner of the château. The path crosses a small valley via a dyke. At its foot lie the remains of what must have been an old watermill. Take the path on the right which climbs towards Fescal Goff. Reach the hamlet by turning left towards the stream, which you cross via a makeshift footbridge. Then climb up towards a farm track, and turn right when you reach it.

(3) As you enter the village, walk between the two rows of houses that make it up, then cut right between the first two buildings to go downhill, between the houses. As you pass, note the spires of the dormer windows on the houses to the left.
Once out of the hamlet, take the path on the left twice, and head towards Kerligo. Follow the road leading to the hamlet for two hundred metres, then turn left towards Kerdoré and pass through this hamlet as well.

(4) Cross the RD148 again and continue straight on towards Kerhuel. At the first junction, take the path on the right which leads out between the first houses. Turn left then right and follow the road. At the right-hand bend, turn left towards Carado.

(5) Opposite the thatched cottage, turn left, then right 150m further on, to go round the properties. Turn left at the second path and go straight on until you reach the junction with a tarmac road. Make a left-right zigzag to reach La Falaise.

(6) At the first house, take the path leading off to the right along the edge of the woods. These woods cover the steep slope of the Vilaine riverbank. When the vegetation is dormant, the path offers beautiful views of the river and the opposite bank, which is also wooded and steep. At the next crossroads, turn left and follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®39. You can follow these markings right to the end. Descend into a small valley, then climb back up to the outskirts of Kergerbé. Turn left to reach another viewpoint overlooking the Vilaine.

(7) From this viewpoint, you can see two confluences with streams flowing down from the plateau, forming small mooring spots. The one on the opposite bank is Port-ès-Gerbes.
Continue along the path at the edge of the woods, then, after turning left again, head down the slope which will take you to the water’s edge.

(8) Return to the starting point, following a lovely track that marks the boundary between the wooded part of the hillside and the wet meadows at the bottom of the valley. The closer you get to the end, the less well-maintained these meadows become, giving way to wild willow groves. Arrive at the car park along the RD148 (S/E).

Notes

This route follows sections of marked routes (GR® 39,PR®, etc.). Please ignore these unless the description specifically mentions them.

Worth a visit

The villages on the plateau feature a significant number of traditional houses. Although simple in form and design, these stone buildings display architectural features (window frames, ornate dormer windows, cornices, chimney stacks… all in cut stone) that reveal a relative wealth on the part of the builders. A few thatched cottages also remain.

The route is also dotted with several ovens built entirely of cut stone, the largest of which is undoubtedly the one on the right, just as you arrive at Fescal Castle. The one at Keranru (off the route) is still in use and its round stone door is still in place.

Nearby, the town and port of La Roche-Bernard are well worth a visit.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

I’m not used to marked trails in this area anymore, and I didn’t necessarily follow the route description properly

Thanks. It’s true that it’s not easy to describe it… I’m more used to paddling past the Marzan area in a sailing canoe on the Vilaine, but it really is a lovely spot for a walk!

You aren’t the first people to tell me about difficulties in this area. I’ll therefore clarify the instructions to make things easier for those who follow.
Best regards.

A lovely walk, with very little road walking. Well, in theory, at least, because we got lost near Fescal Goff where the route description was vague, which meant we ended up in Kermoué and had to walk for twenty minutes along the roadside to get back on track. We’ll do this walk again, hoping not to make any mistakes this time! Thanks for the walk suggestion in any case.

The principle behind Visorando is to describe a route using a map. So don’t be surprised if the route doesn’t include any physical signposts (signs, markings, etc.), even though you may find some along the paths you take, as these are not signposted routes. I would even say it’s best to ignore any markings you see on the ground, as they may lead you somewhere other than where the route is intended to go.
As for the walking time, I agree with you, but it is the Visorando software that calculates the displayed walking times (3.5 km/h). We can certainly do better.

A lovely walk, but there aren't many signposts.
However, experienced hikers should allow two hours.

Actually, I was wrong. It was in point 3, at Fescal Goff. Thank you for sharing your story.

As it isn't a Kerado on the route, is it a Carado?
Kind regards
