This walk takes you along theGR®®14from Dormans to Port à Binson, through vineyards and woods. The return journey follows the banks of the Marne on the unpaved side, which is the more pleasant route. It is long but not difficult, as there is little change in elevation.

Description of the walk

This walk is accessible from the Paris region, Épernay and Reims via the TER Vallée de la Marne service to Dormans station.

The walk starts at the entrance to the grounds of Dormans Castle, where there is parking for a few cars.

(S/E) Enter the park and head straight towards the Memorial to the Battles of the Marne. Go round the Memorial, turn left and leave the park via the back exit. Walk to the road.

(1) Cross the road carefully and join theGR®® on the opposite side. From this point to Port à Binson, you can follow the GR®® signposts.

(2) At the first junction, take the path on the left. Continue straight on to the village of Vassy, keeping the power line on your left.

(3) Cross Rue des Mondets and take Rue des Mariniers. Continue along the path, veering slightly to the right.

(4) After crossing the stream, turn right into the woods.

(5) On the small road, turn right, then immediately left. The path crosses the woods, then joins a small road. Turn left onto this road. Ignore the next two junctions on the left, pass the entrance to Mortgrange, and after 400m, you’ll reach a wide bend.

(6) As you leave the woods, before the bend, turn left at a right angle. The path follows the power line and leads to the vineyards. Take the first proper path on the right, then turn left between the vineyard and the woods. Continue along this path, which runs alongside the woods, then enters the vineyard.

(7) When you reach a T-junction, turn right towards the village of Cerseuil. Enter the village.

(8) At the chapel, turn left, and after 50m turn right onto the Sentier du Clos de Tirvet. At the end of the path, turn left. At the crossroads, head towards Mareuil-le-Port and walk 200m along this road.

(9) Take the path on the right, cross the stream and continue straight on through the vineyards.

(10) When you reach a T-junction, turn right.

(11) At the crossroads, cross the road and take the vineyard path opposite, which heads off to the right.

(12) At the crossroads, turn left, then continue straight on to Port à Binson, staying on the GR®®.

(13) Cross the road (D3) and take Rue de la Fontaine straight ahead. Take the second street on the right, pass the post office, then head left towards the bridge. Go over the railway line, then before the Marne, take the steps on the left leading down to the banks of the Marne. End of theGR®®.

(14) At the bottom of the stairs, continue straight ahead. Walk past the water sports centre and stay on the path that runs alongside it, then joins the Marne. Follow this grassy path for about 5km.

(15) At the junction leading to the level crossing (several houses), stay along the banks of the Marne and continue for another 800m to the next fork.

(16) Turn left, go under the railway line and walk to the road. Please note, this grassy path is not visible from a distance.

(17) Cross with care and head towards Bouquigny.

(18) At the T-junction, turn left onto the Grande Rue, then right onto Rue Mansard.

(19) When you reach the vineyards, turn right and continue in this direction along the concrete path. Follow the yellow GRP®® markers. Walk in the same direction, ignoring the paths on the right. At the first junction, go straight ahead.

(20) At the second junction, turn left towards the village of Vassieux. Continue straight ahead.

(21) When you reach the square (non-potable fountain and shelter), turn right and then immediately left, still following the yellow markers.

(22) At the sign marking the exit from Vassieux, turn left. Then, stop following the yellow markers. Walk towards the vineyard, then turn right, then right again, until you reach the road.

(23) Cross the road and head straight ahead, then turn right, left and left again into Rue de la Fontaine. Walk past the wayside shrine and continue in the same direction.

(24) When you reach the castle wall, turn right. Take the next left, and walk to the park entrance, which is the finish point (S/E).

Yes, the only people we came across were fishermen and people enjoying the banks of the Marne.
With 40 plums and a tart base, we treated ourselves.

Thanks for the review. You managed the 24km in the height of summer – well done!

I was in the area today; there really are plenty of blackberries.

And not a single hiker in sight.

We took advantage of 15 August to go on this day-long hike.
The start of the walk, passing the castle and the Great War memorial, is very pleasant and a great spot for a few photos.
The first section is through the cool undergrowth, then quickly into the vineyards.
The section along the banks of the Marne isn’t the most visually rewarding, but it allows you to pick up the pace.
The vineyard sections are as lovely as ever, even if the smell of sulphur is quite strong.
A walk suitable for all levels. The current heat and the fact that the route is mostly in open country mean you’ll lose a few litres of water, so make sure you stay hydrated. There are a few fountains where you can cool off, but the water isn’t drinkable.

Allow plenty of time and bring a few bags to pick up the blackberries and plums dotted along the route. ;-)

Thank you for your review.

The grounds of Dormans Castle are a little slice of paradise, especially the upper part, where there’s no one around.

A lovely walk combining brisk walking (along the Marne) with ascents and descents (through woods and vineyards). Moderate difficulty but a long walk (25 km).
Stunning scenery and a variety of sights (river, forests, vineyards, towns, monuments...).
We recommend it.

I was there today, and it’s true—the sun’s out and it’s very hot. But the grounds of Dormans Castle, with their ponds and tall trees, are a real treat.

A lovely walk through the vineyards, passing through some charming little villages.

I did this walk on a very hot Saturday. There’s not much shade, which makes it even more challenging. Don’t forget a hat and plenty of water!!!

Thanks to the person who suggested this route.

A lovely walk on a sunny day in sweltering heat.
There is very little shade on the paths outside the woods, but there are fountains (non-potable water) in the villages to cool off.
On the grassy paths, the grass is often quite tall.
In Vassy, we took a detour to see the Sainte Eulalie chapel, which is currently closed for safety reasons.
Note that in Bouquigny, between the Grande Rue and Rue Mansard, there is a short street called Rue des Estivants.
On the way back, we returned to the castle grounds to keep cool whilst waiting for our train. The storm forecast by the weather service broke at the end of the day.
The storm was more severe in the Château-Thierry area, as trees had fallen onto the tracks. The train remained at the station and we travelled to Paris by bus.
