From Coulommiers to Chartronges through Brie

Nineteenth stage of the Grand Tour of Île-de-France via the GR®11, entirely in Brie, and first stage of a series of three necessary to connect Coulommiers station to Provins station, with two nights on site.

As accommodation options are limited in the middle of Brie, it is suggested for this stage to head to La Ferté-Gaucher aerodrome, which is slightly off the GR® route, near which there is a hotel-restaurant where it is possible to spend the night. Although this adds several kilometres to the stage, it offers a good compromise between the length of this stage and the following ones, the longest possible route on the GR® and the proximity to Provins. But this is not the only option, of course: see the Practical Information section for other suggestions.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Grand tour of Île-de-France in 34 stages on the GR®11

The route follows the GR®11 marked in red and white to Chevru (17) and is no longer marked after that.

Red and white markings (GR®11)

(S) From Coulommiers station, go to the roundabout opposite and cross the Fausse Rivière (a branch of the Grand Morin) immediately afterwards. Continue to the junction with Rue des Capucins.

(1) Turn right onto this street, then left onto Rue du Général De Gaulle. Cross two other branches of the Grand Morin and continue to the tourist office, after the town hall.

(2) Turn right onto Impasse Venet Rotival. Continue along this road, passing the municipal library (former prison) on your right. When you reach a perpendicular road, turn left and cross a small canal.

(3) Immediately take the Promenade du Bord de l'eau on the right. Ignore the first street on the left, then turn right at the next intersection. Continue along the road until you reach another T-junction in Pontmoulin.

(4) Take Rue de Pontmoulin on the right, pass various branches of the Grand Morin, then turn left at the Petits Aulnoys crossroads. Cross a small stream and take the road on the right until you reach the old railway line.

(5) After crossing the railway line, take the path on the left that runs alongside it, then veers away from it. Join a road and follow it in the same direction as you climb uphill.

(6) Cross the D37 carefully and continue climbing opposite. Ignore a path coming from the left and arrive at another well-marked path.

(7) Turn sharply left and follow the path. Then take the first path on the right towards the hamlet of La Couture.

(8) First turn right then left in the hamlet and exit on the other side. Continue straight ahead, crossing a road and ignoring the perpendicular paths until you reach a new T-junction. Continue left for 300 metres until you reach another four-way junction.

(9) Take the track on the right between woods and fields, descending slightly. Turn left at the T-junction at the edge of a wood, then immediately right. Enter the wood and join the D934.

(10) Cross the road carefully and continue straight ahead. After 400 metres, you will come to a three-way junction. Take the path on the left and continue until you come to another small road after a power line.

(11) Take the path opposite, then after 100 m, take the road on the right to reach Marolles-en-Brie. Then take Rue du Cèdre on the left and follow its right-hand bend to arrive at the church square.

(12) Turn left onto Rue de l'Arche. Pass two roads on your right and reach another road on your left.

(13) Turn left, go straight through the hamlet of Milhard and continue for about 600 metres.

(14) Turn right, passing an old oil well on your right, cross a perpendicular path and arrive at the Malnoue farm.

(15) Continue straight ahead across the fields for another 1 km until you reach the Quatre Bornes crossroads.

(16) Take the track on the left to reach and follow the edge of the woods. At the next crossroads, turn left to enter the woods. Follow the path straight ahead to the edge, then across the fields to reach a road in front of a solar farm.

No markings

(17) Leave the GR® trail straight ahead and turn left onto the road to reach Chevru. Turn left in front of the church.

(18) Take Rue de l'Ancienne Gare on the right and follow it to the last houses.

(19) Follow the first farm track on the left and continue to a T-junction. Take the track on the right until you reach a road.

(20) Follow this road to the left for about 100 metres, then turn right onto the straight path. You will come to another T-junction with a farm on the left. Take the track on the right, then left 200 metres further on, and continue to the first houses in La Bochetière.

(21) Take the road to the left, cross a stream and arrive at a perpendicular road. Make a short first turn right then left to continue on the path opposite for about 500 metres until you reach a grove of trees, the Bois de la Foi.

(22) Follow the path on the right and continue until you reach a perpendicular road. Follow it to the left, as well as the path that extends from it. Reach the junction with the second path on the right, shortly after another path on the left.

(23) Take the path on the right until you reach the road at the entrance to Féraubry. Continue straight ahead and follow the path turning left. Then take the first path on the right and continue until you reach the mechanical leisure centre. The Grand Terre hotel is located a little further on the left (E).

Notes

(S) Coulommiers station, terminus of the Coulommiers branch of the Transilien P (Paris-Est network). See theIle-de-France Mobilités website for timetables.

(E) Hôtel Le Grand Terre, at the La Ferté-Gaucher motor sports centre (airfield and go-kart track). Food available on site. Other accommodation and dining options are available in La Ferté-Gaucher, about 3 km to the north.

To continue to La Ferté-Gaucher, go straight on after the hotel, cross the D215 and follow the road opposite, continuing straight on north for about 2 km. When you reach the main road, turn right to reach the centre.

In La Ferté-Gaucher, you can also take bus 7717 back to Coulommiers (one bus every hour or every two hours).

Another suggestion for this stage: stay in Beton-Bazoches (halfway between Coulommiers and Provins) and continue on the GR® from Chevru (description inthe next stage). The stage would then be longer, but it would be possible to reach Provins in just two days, accepting another very long stage the next day.

Apart from its length, this stage in the Brie region, like the next two, does not present any particular technical difficulties. However, you should still bring suitable equipment for a long hike.

Hike completed on 8 May 2025 with the aim of covering the entire GR® 11.
