From Champcenest to Provins through Brie

This is the twenty-first stage of the Grand Tour of Île-de-France via the GR®11, and the last of the three stages through Brie between Coulommiers and Provins. It is still quite long but without any real difficulty.
This stage completes the crossing of Brie, reaching Provins, whose iconic monuments (Caesar's Tower and the dome of the Collegiate Church of Saint-Quiriace) can be seen from afar in good weather, marking the destination of the stage!

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Grand tour of Île-de-France in 34 stages on the GR®11

Description of the walk

Departure: Domaine des Hirondellesguesthouse in Haut-Fays, Champcenest.

The route follows the GR® 11 (red and white markings) from the Rue du Bois farm (2). However, a short detour off the GR® between (5) and (7) is suggested to get closer to Jouy Abbey.

Unmarked route

(S) Leave the Haut-Fays farm via the main north entrance and go around it on the right-hand side to pick up the path heading south then west towards Beauregard until you reach a road.

(1) Turn left to cross the hamlet, then take the path on the right at the exit, until you reach the Rue du Bois farm, after passing a power line.

Red and white markings (GR®11)

(2) Find the GR® and follow it to the left after the grove surrounding the farm. Reach a road and follow it to the right. Enter the Jouy National Forest and reach the D75a after a straight line through the woods.

(3) Cross the road, continue straight ahead slightly to the right, then take the first path on the left after 400 m. Follow it for 300 m and turn right onto the Basse Route, still in the forest. Follow it straight ahead for 2.5 km until you cross the Route de l'Abbaye after passing a well-marked perpendicular path (as well as several other less obvious paths).

(4) Turn right onto this road, cross the D75 and continue to the edge of the woods.

Yellow markings (PR®)

(5) Leave the GR® on your left and continue straight ahead on a PR® towards the abbey, straight ahead.

(6) Observe the ruins of the abbey grounds on the right before following the PR® on the road that turns left. Continue 500 m along the road, then turn sharply left onto a path that begins just before the woods and ends up running along its edge.

Red and white markings (GR®11)

(7) As soon as you re-enter the woods, find the GR® and follow it on the path furthest to the right (a path that differs from the other straight paths in the forest). After a good kilometre, you will reach the Route Jacques. Follow it to the right until you reach the crossroads 150 metres away, where six paths converge.

(8) Follow the GR® trail, which branches off onto Route Gendarme, the second path on the left. After 400 metres, take another small path on the right and follow it to the D231.

(9) Cross the road carefully and continue straight ahead. Take the third path on the left and pass in front of the former Chêne Montauban (a remarkable tree that was unfortunately uprooted during the storms of 1999 but left there as it was). Continue until you reach the Basse Route just after.

(10) Take this road to the left, then take the second path on the right. Leave the forest after a short descent and arrive in the suburbs of Chenoise. Continue to a four-way intersection and continue straight ahead for a little while longer.

Yellow markings (PR®)

(11) Optional detour: take a path that branches off to the left between residences and follow it straight ahead until you arrive in front of the church.

(12) Return via the street parallel to this path 50 m to the south. When you reach the T-junction at the end, turn right to rejoin the path you took on the way out and return to the intersection.

Red and white markings (GR®11)

(11) Continue left along Rue des Thuyas until you reach Rue du Parc after 400 metres. Follow it to the right as you leave the town and continue for 300 metres along the road.

(13) Take the path that branches off to the left into the fields. Follow it for 2.5 km until you reach the Brosse farm. In good weather, the César Tower and the dome of the Collegiate Church of Saint-Quiriace in Provins may begin to be visible on the horizon, marking the end of the stage!

(14) Follow the road as it turns left and rejoin the D231.

(15) Cross the D231 again carefully and continue on the road opposite until you reach the Limars farm after a short climb.

(16) Continue along the path that goes in the same direction, leaving the road on your right. You will reach Mortery after about 2 km and crossing a small valley. Continue to the centre of the hamlet.

(17) Turn right onto the D55 and take the first path on the right, keeping Provins in sight as you get closer. Pass two perpendicular paths and arrive at a crossroads on the heights of the Durteint valley.

(18) Turn left and follow the path downhill. You will rejoin the D55.

(19) Follow the road to the right for 200 metres, passing a small stream, and take the first road on the right. Pass Durteint and climb back up to the plateau, turning left. Once at the top, continue straight ahead for more than 2 kilometres until you reach the ramparts of Provins, which will come into view.

(20) Enter the old town of Provins via the Porte de Jouy and continue along Rue de Jouy until you reach Place du Châtel.

(21) Continue straight ahead, take Rue de l'Ormerie, then turn right onto Rue Jean Desmarets, under the Tour César.

(22) Continue straight ahead, taking Rue Saint-Nicolas opposite, which slopes quite steeply (off the GR®). At the bottom, cross Rue Michelin. Opposite, pass a street that branches off to the left and reach the next crossroads.

(23) Rejoin the GR® and follow it to the left along Boulevard Gambetta and then Boulevard Gilbert Chomton. Cross Ru de Barcq, then La Vouzie and reach Rue Aristide Briand.

(24) Turn right, cross a canal and follow it to the left towards the station, crossing a small park. Join the road at the end of the park to reach the station a little further on the right (E).

Return: Provinsstation , terminus of the eponymous branch of the Transilien P line.

Notes

(S) Domaine des Hirondelles in Haut-Fays, Champcenest. The stage is described as following on from this one, with a night in Champcenest in between. Adjust the stages accordingly if another accommodation option is chosen.

(E) Provins station, one of the termini of the Transilien P line. One train per hour to Paris-Est. See theÎle-de-France Mobilités website for timetables.

As in the two previous stages, the route crosses large areas without shade from Chenoise onwards (11). Not recommended during periods of high heat.

The end of the stage consists of crossing the medieval town of Provins. A direct route to the station is suggested, which does not take into account the town's superb historical heritage. As this comes at the end of a long stage, possibly following two other long stages, it was assumed that fatigue would take precedence over the desire to visit the town. Nevertheless, a thorough visit to the town is worthwhile, and one will be offered at the start ofthe next stage, which is much shorter. But there is nothing to stop you doing so at the end of this stage!

Hike completed on 10 May 2025 with the aim of covering the entire GR® 11.
