From Chartronges to Champcenest through Brie

The twentieth stage of the Grand Tour of Île-de-France via the GR®11, the second of three stages through Brie between Coulommiers and Provins, with two nights' accommodation in each place to make the most of the region. The stage is long but not difficult, with very little elevation gain.
The stage is designed to follow directly on from the one coming from Coulommiers and precede directly the one going to Provins. But of course, there is nothing to stop you from dividing the route differently.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Grand tour of Île-de-France in 34 stages on the GR®11

Description of the walk

Departure: Hôtel Le Grand Terre in Chartronges, at the La Ferté-Gaucher motor sports centre.

The route first joins the village of Chevru via unmarked paths. From the Commanderie farm in Chevru (7), it rejoins the GR®11 (red and white markings) and follows it almost to the end.

Unmarked route

(S) From the hotel, turn right, then right again to leave the leisure centre to the west and find a path through the fields to Féraubry. Take the first path on the left, which goes around the hamlet on the right, and you will come to a small road.

(1) Turn left onto the road (to avoid taking the same route as the day before to reach Chevru) and continue straight on towards Chartronges until you reach a water tower.

(2) After a slight left-right turn, continue on the road opposite. Cross a stream and then a road connecting two farms, and continue straight ahead. Let a path coming from the left pass and continue to a crossroads at a grove of trees.

(3) Take the path on the right. Follow the edge of a copse, pass a perpendicular path and continue across fields until you reach a T-junction.

(4) Turn left and head towards the Hante farm.

(5) When you reach the road, turn right and follow it to Chevru, more than 3 km away.

(6) In the centre of the village, first turn left then right in front of the church to rejoin Rue Médéric Charot. Continue to the Commanderie farm at the solar panel installations.

Route on the GR®11 (red and white markings)

(7) Find the GR® and follow it to the left, between the farm buildings and the solar sheds. Continue south to the D215.

(8) Take the hard shoulder on the right at an angle to the D215 for about 500 m (be careful, the road is quite busy). Cross the small wooded area and take the path on the left after the woods, which slopes gently downwards.

(9) Follow the path passing some distance from the village of Dagny (visible on the right). Reach the farming hamlet of Moneuse and arrive at the D35 at a wayside cross.

(10) After about 100 metres on the road, take the first path on the left and follow it for 200 metres until you come to a path branching off to the right.

(11) Take this path on the right to Montcel. Cross the road in front of a stele and continue for 200 metres until you come to another path branching off to the right.

(12) Follow this path slightly downhill and cross a road and then a stream shortly before the entrance to Grand Frétoy.

(13) Continue along the road, following its left-hand bend, and cross the hamlet.

(14) Continue straight on Chemin des Noyères when the main road branches off to the right. Pass some silos and farm buildings and follow the road, then the path eastwards for 2 km until you reach the N4 at La Groue, at the entrance to Beton-Bazoches.

(15) A short detour to the church is recommended. To do this, follow the N4 to the left for 200 m, then take the path on the left that branches off from it. After a left turn, take a small path on the right that goes down the embankment (be careful, it is not easy to find). Follow it between a natural area on your left and private gardens on your right. At the end, continue left onto Rue Tessier and go straight on to the church.

(16) Continue straight ahead to the banks of the Aubetin.

(17) Retrace your steps back to the church.

(16) Retrace your steps to the N4 and follow it to the right.

(15) Cross the N4 (very busy but relatively safe here in the urban area), take the small road for 100 metres and turn right to cross the Noëlle business park. Turn left at the roundabout at the end of the road to exit on the field side.

(18) As soon as you leave the area, take the path furthest to the right and follow it for a good kilometre to Boisdon.

(19) Make a small detour (off the GR®) to the left and take the second right to pass in front of the church. Then turn right again and rejoin the GR® a little further on. Take the first road on the left for 50 metres.

(20) Turn onto the path on the left. Ignore three other paths on the left and continue to a T-junction.

(21) Take the track on the right downhill, cross a stream and then a perpendicular path, follow the bend to the right after the second copse and you will come to another T-junction.

(22) Turn left until you reach a road. Follow it in the same direction to cross the hamlet of La Conquilie and arrive at a crossroads at its exit.

(23) Continue along the path opposite, pass under a power line and follow the left turn. Arrive at the Rue du Bois farm at a copse.

(24) To finish the day's stage, leave the GR® trail on your right and continue straight ahead, then turn left at the three-way junction under the power line. You will reach the hamlet of Beauregard.

(25) Take the road on the left, then the first path on the right. Follow it to Haut-Fays, the farm visible ahead on the left. The Domaine des Hirondelles* guesthouse is located in the wing of the farm visible from the path. Enter the farmhouse through the main entrance on the other side (E).

Notes

(S) Hôtel Le Grand Terre, at the La Ferté-Gaucher motor sports centre. It is also possible to start from the centre of La Ferté-Gaucher, if, for example, you arrive by bus (bus 7717 from Coulommiers, for example). This adds a few kilometres to the stage, but it is feasible.

In this case, join the D934 on the left bank of the Grand Morin. Follow it westwards to the edge of town. After following the road that veers left at a three-way junction in front of a factory, take the small road on the left that first climbs between the houses, turning right, then turn left again to take a path that leads into the fields, heading south. Follow this path, continuing south-southwest then due south, until you reach the D215. Cross the road and take the road opposite, heading towards the motor sports centre and the Le Grand Terre hotel.

(E) Domaine des Hirondelles*, bed and breakfast in a farmhouse surrounded by fields in Champcenest. Meals can be provided on site by a caterer and enjoyed on the terrace in fine weather.

Arriving at Haut-Fays requires staying overnight. Another option is to stay in Beton-Bazoches (a few accommodation options also available), accessible directly from Coulommiers entirely via the GR® 11 at the end of a very long stage. The next day's stage to Provins (consisting of the end of this stage followed by the next day's stage) can also be done in one day, but at the cost of a longer distance.

Please note that there are very few shaded sections on this stage. This may be important if you are hiking in summer (avoid periods of high heat and, in any case, bring suitable equipment).

Hike completed on 9 May 2025 with the aim of covering the entire GR® 11.
