From Provins to Longueville between the Voulzie and Méances valleys.

Twenty-second stage of the Grand Tour of Île-de-France via the GR®11. A short stage connecting Longueville to Provins, allowing you to rest after the long previous stages crossing Brie. As the stage is short, we suggest starting with a short circular loop through the old town of Provins to discover its rich heritage.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Grand tour of Île-de-France in 34 stages on the GR®11

Description of the walk

Access: Provinsstation , on the Transilien P line

Initially, the route takes a circular route through Provins without following any actual signposted path. It then rejoins the GR®11 and its red and white markings, which it follows to the end.

Provins circular sightseeing tour:

(S) From the station, take Rue Hégésippe Moreau, which starts opposite. Cross a canal and then the Voulzie, and turn slightly left onto Rue du Four des Raines. Continue left between a school and the media library (while following the Voulzie, which flows in a ditch on the right). Continue straight on Rue Fourtier Masson to Place Honoré de Balzac.

(1) Turn right to walk along the square and continue along Rue des Cordeliers. First turn left then right onto Rue du Val to take Rue Sainte-Croix immediately afterwards. Turn left onto Rue Toussaint Rose, in front of Sainte-Croix Church.

(2) Take Rue Valentin Abeille on the right and enter the Victor Garnier garden opposite (if it is closed, go round it on the left). Cross the park and exit on the other side, to the north.

(3) Take the path on the left which leads onto Boulevard d’Aligre. Turn into the third street on the left, Rue des Prés, passing in front of the rose garden.

(4) Shortly after the rose garden, turn right, follow the bend to the left and continue straight on along Rue des Blancs Manteaux, then up the path that continues from it. Reach and cross, halfway up the slope, Rue Saint-Thibault, a perpendicular street that also leads uphill.

(5) Take the steps opposite to reach Rue du Collège at the top. Follow it to the right, then turn left onto Rue Pierre Ythier to reach the forecourt of the Collégiale Saint-Quiriace. Cross the square and head towards the nearby César Tower.

(6) Go round the tower on your left, following the small path that joins Rue du Palais. Follow it to the left until you reach Place du Châtel. Cross this square to Rue Couverte, arriving at the opposite corner.

(7) Take Rue Couverte to the right, then Rue de Jouy as it continues. Reach and cross the Porte de Jouy at the ramparts.

(8) Turn left onto the small road that runs along the outside of the ramparts. Follow its bend to the left and continue to the Porte Saint-Jean.

(9) Re-enter the old town through this gate and continue straight on until you reach Rue Couverte. You will find Place du Châtel on your right.

(7) Cross the square and exit on the opposite side onto Rue de l'Ormerie. Then take Rue Jean Desmarets on the right and continue to the junction with Ruelle des Morts on the left and Rue Saint-Nicolas opposite.

(10) Then turn right onto Chemin de la Montagne du Bourreau, which descends quite steeply. At the bottom, cross Avenue du Général De Gaulle and continue straight ahead along Boulevard Gambetta, Boulevard Gilbert Chomton and then Boulevard Carnot. As you do so, you will pass the Ru de Barcq and the Voulzie.

(11) Turn right onto Rue Aristide Briand, then left to walk alongside the canal after crossing it, through a small park. Continue straight ahead along Avenue Jean-Jaurès, passing the station again, and carry on to Rue des Bordes.

Route to Longueville on the GR®11:

(12) Turn right, cross the railway tracks, and take the street on the right at the roundabout. Then turn left onto the Sentier de la Fontaine, which runs through a residential area. Continue to the junction with Rue des Hêtres.

(13) The GR® continuesstraight ahead along the Sentier de la Fontaine.Follow it straight on and continue along Rue Jeanne Chauvin.

(14) Follow the road as it bends to the right, then take the path branching off to the left to join the D1, which runs just above. Take this road in the same direction (with safe verges) and follow its sweeping bend to the left, until you reach Chemin des Grattons in front of the hospital.

(15) Turn right onto Chemin des Grattons. Pass the recycling centre and continue to the Hennepont farm.

(16) Take the track branching off to the left across the fields, and take the second track on the right after 600 m. Follow its bend to the left after 400 m, and turn left again a little further on, until you rejoin the D1.

(17) Follow this road to the right for 100 m, and when it begins to curve to the right on the descent, continue straight ahead onto a small road. Cross the D1 again at the end of this small road and continue straight ahead along Rue aux Taillants, in Chalautre-la-Petite.

(18) At the end, take Rue des Moulins on the left and return to the D1 between the town hall and a wash house.

(19) Continue to the right and rejoin Place de l'Escargot on the right. Continue to the church.

(20) Turn left into Ruelle des Bretonnes in front of the church. Cross the Ru des Méances and join Rue de la Font d'Orson. Follow it to the left for 300 m.

(21) Take Rue de Longueville, the second on the right, crossing the stream, and follow it for 400 m.

(22) Turn right onto Rue du Pressoir Dieu, which climbs towards the woods. After 200 m, take the path branching off to the left. Follow it, running between woods and fields, for a good kilometre until you reach the hamlet of Poigny.

(23) Turn left at the first houses to head back across the fields. Reach and cross a wood, then follow the active quarries down the slope. Continue along the path, which slopes gently downwards, until you reach a tarmac road.

(24) Take the path branching off to the left. After 200 m, turn left onto a path that climbs uphill. Continue until you reach a road next to a quarry. Turn left at the two successive three-way junctions and arrive in Septveilles-le-Bas, a residential area.

(25) Follow the road to the left, which turns right shortly afterwards. Continue straight on, crossing the entire neighbourhood and ignoring the roads that cross your path.

(26) At the end, turn left to continue skirting the neighbourhood on your left. After 300 m, turn right onto the path leading towards the fields. Pass a water tower, continue for 200 m and turn right at the next three-way junction. Reach the edge of the woods after another 300 m.

(27) Continue straight on to begin the descent through the woods. Exit the woods further down, in front of the Longueville railway viaduct, which is clearly visible opposite. Complete the descent across the fields, passing under a first railway bridge (the Longueville-Provins branch line), then under a second (the wider main Paris-Mulhouse line).

(28) Leave the GR®11 here by turning left to follow the railway line. Turn left, keeping as close to the tracks as possible, at the three-way junction that appears after 100 m, and head for Longueville station a little further on (E).

Return: Longuevillestation , on the same branch of the Transilien P line.

(E) Longueville station, turning point for the same branch of the Transilien P. One train per hour in each direction.

See theÎle-de-France Mobilités website for timetables.

Short, easy stage. The circular route in Provins at the start of the stage is a suggested itinerary that allows you to see, in a non-exhaustive way, the most emblematic monuments of Provins, in the lower and upper towns. Everyone is free to do it or not, or to follow another itinerary. It is of course also possible not to do it and to start directly on the GR® in (12) as soon as you leave the station!

At the end of the stage, it may also be interesting to visit the Living Railway Museum located in the railway roundhouse behind Longueville station (500 metres from the station, well signposted).

Hike completed on 31 May 2025 with the aim of covering the entire GR® 11.
