In the Corbière Forest, starting from Saint-Jean-sur-Vilaine

Wide forest lanes, a walk through the woods where only birdsong can be heard, plus a pond where large waterbirds reign supreme and fish provide their meal – this is the ultimate aim of this walk, which will end as it began: on sunken paths through the bocage, with very little tarmac.

(S/E) Take Rue de l’Église heading south-west. Cross Rue du Tertre-Haut and take the path opposite, slightly to the right. After skirting the River Vilaine below on your left, the path branches off to the right then to the left, leading onto a street leading to a house. Turn right.

(1) Cross the D857 (Rue de Rennes) with great care and continue along the road opposite, slightly to the right. Pass La Machotière and Les Trois Roches.

(2) At La Gaudinais, in the bend, carry on straight ahead along a track. Follow it to the right and then to the left. Pass under a medium-voltage power line and reach a road.

(3) Cross the road and continue straight ahead, keeping slightly to the right. When you reach Les Alleux, turn left, then after 50 metres, follow the path to the right. Before entering the woods, turn right, then at La Piellière, turn left and continue along the D857.

(4) Take the path on the left. Follow it round a bend to the right, then a second bend to the left. Cross a stream and reach a road. Cross the road and carry on straight ahead. As you approach the houses at Bézier, turn left. When you reach a Fork in the road, take the path on the right and arrive at a T-junction.

(5) Turn right and follow the path, which bends first to the left, then to the right. At the end, turn left once, then left again 250 m further on.

(6) After 350 m, turn right and follow the path to a Y-junction. Turn left, then turn right after 200 m. Turn left for the first time 100 m further on, then turn left again after 150 m.

(7) At the end, turn right and continue along the path. Turn left after 200 m and continue to a bend near the Corbière pond. Follow the path branching off to the left until you reach a junction on the right.

(5) Take the path to the right, to rejoin the lane you took in the opposite direction earlier. Ignore the path coming from the right (the Fork in the road you passed earlier), then, as you approach the Maison du Bézier, turn right. Cross the road and continue to the left to reach the D105 county road.

(4) Follow it to the left, then after 150 m, cross the road and take the path on the right. Follow it as it bends to the right and continue due south to the hamlet of La Bâte.

(8) Turn left onto the road, then after about a hundred metres, take the path on the right. Pass under the medium-voltage power line. Continue to the left towards the east until you reach the Fouquetière farm.

(9) Carry on straight ahead and follow the path as it bends to the right. Continue south-south-west, ignoring a path on the left, until you reach the hamlet of La Morandière. Walk through the entire hamlet to reach Rue de Vitré (D857).

(10) Turn right onto the footpath and, after 70 m, cross the road with great care to follow the road to the left. Cross La Touche, then turn right onto a path. Pass through the Coteaux housing estate, then first turn left then right to follow Rue de Bellevue, which leads to Rue de l’Église, where the starting car park is located (S/E).
