Description of the walk

(S/E) The route starts at the small square in front of Orschwiller Town Hall. Head north along Rue des Prélats, then take the path between the school and the vineyards, following the Compostela markings (also marked with a yellow rectangle with a white line through it). Follow this path through the vineyard, then a small wood and along the grounds of a château. Shortly after a large bend, look for a path on the left called Tour du village.

(1) Take the narrow path on the left, then turn left onto Rue des Chars. At the road, turn right, then after 50 metres, turn left, then right again onto Rue de la Wick, which continues through the vineyard. The signs remain the same. Continue straight ahead until you see the church in Châtenois.

(2) At the crossroads, you can take a tour of the old town (church, ramparts, Tour des Sorcières) and then return. At this point, leave the Camino de Santiago and take theGR®5. Please note that these are not the usualGR® markers, but a red rectangle. Follow these markers.

GR®5

Continue in the same direction and after 200 metres, take the path on the left. Pass in front of the spring (small chapel) and the reservoir (viewpoint). The path crosses the vineyards and then enters the woods. Walk to the gazebo (shelter).

(3) From the gazebo, continue in the same direction. After more than 1 km, the path arrives at the Col du Rothenberg. You can picnic in the shelter or outside.

(4) From the shelter, turn slightly to the left (red rectangle markings). Walk to a barrier indicating a modified route.

(5) Turn right and follow the new path recently cleared by bulldozer, following the red rectangle markings. This new route avoids Wick.

(6) At this point, the detour rejoins the old route. After 100 m, you will come to a fork.

(7) Turn left at the fork. Walk until you hear traffic on the road.

(8) Just before the road, take the path on the right. After about 1500 m, you will reach a fork with a bench at a place called Kreuzweg.

End of theGR®5

(9) Leave theGR®5. Continue in the same direction, following the yellow ring markers. Walk to the road.

(10) At Schlaflager, cross the road, pass to the right of the hotel and take the path that descends alongside it. Stay on this path, following the yellow ring markers, until you reach a fork, where you can return directly to the starting point by continuing along the same path marked with yellow rings.

(11) To follow the entire route, take the path to the right, marked with a red ring. A few metres after the fork, pass a departmental boundary marker from 1791. Continue along the path for 1 km until you reach a sign indicating an orientation table on the right.

(12) After seeing the orientation table, return to the path and continue downhill. When you reach the edge of the vineyards, take the path on the right that crosses the vineyard. When you reach a grove, take the path on the left and walk to the calvary. At this point, you can take a tour of Saint Hippolyte, a very pretty fortified village, and then return to the calvary.

(13) Turn left onto the Compostela trail (marked with Compostela and yellow rectangle crossed with white). If you are returning from the village, it is on the right at the calvary. Walk to the entrance to Orschwiller.

(14) Climb up to the orientation table, high above the ruins of the old church. Then walk along the cemetery and return to the starting point at Orschwiller Town Hall (S/E).

Bakery in Orschwiller (you will pass it on your way). Food shops and cafés/restaurants in Saint Hippolyte and Châtenois.

Wine producers and cellars in the villages along the route.

Worth a visit

Alternative route to climb Haut Koenigbourg: at (9), stay on theGR®5until you reach the castle. Then descend via the same route or take a shortcut towards Orschwiller or Schlaflager and rejoin the route at (10). Please note that there is a steep descent.

There are many activities nearby: monkey mountain, eagle sanctuary, etc.

A very beautiful hike, done in mixed weather. The first part is through vineyards, then through the forest, and back to the vineyards to finish. The only downside is that the first 4 km are on a concrete road. A shame! If you want a quiet break, stop before point 7, as the discovery trail attracts a lot of people in the summer season (close to the road!). There's an interesting change of scenery between points 11 and 12, in a semi-arid area (be careful not to miss the right turn leading there and don't go too far down the wide stony path).

A beautiful route through vineyards and forests, with stunning views, best enjoyed in spring when the broom is in bloom.

A beautiful hike with varied terrain and views. Some cinematic views on the descent between points 11 and 14. At this time of year, the autumn colours are stunning. Thanks to the organiser.
