(S) From the Oppedette municipal lodge, retrace your steps from the previous day and, at the first junction, turn right, then left, onto a narrow lane. Pass the fountain and wash house on your left and continue straight ahead, then head down the street between the two cemeteries until you reach a junction.
(1) At the hiking signpost, head to the viewpoint at the far end of the car park, which offers a superb view of the gorges.
(2) Head back to the hiking signpost.
(1) Turn left onto the yellow-marked path, whichdescends into the gorges. Along this descent, which is equipped with handrails, you can spot karstic caves, rock shelters and arches amidst the rugged landscape. Information boards are dotted along the route.
(3) At the signpost at the bottom of the gorge, turn left to follow the Calvalon as it winds through a narrow, dark and cool canyon.
(4) At the signpost, cross the dry stream and climb the steep slope on the opposite side, then continue via a sturdy miller’s ladder into a cave.
(5) At the sign at the top, turn left onto a path running along a ledge, offering fine views. Climb up a ravine before crossing it and descending the opposite bank. Continue along the overhanging path to reach the D201 at the Pont de la Blaque (elevation 421).
(6) At the signpost, turn right onto the GR®6. Pass through the hamlet of La Grosse Blaque and reach a junction 150 m before the Chapelle Saint-Ferréol.
(7) At the signpost, stay on the road. Cross the bridge (elevation 398) and, immediately at the Fork in the road, leave the D155 to follow the Route de la Chapelle Saint-Ferréol opposite. As it bends to the right, leave the road and take the path on the left. At the junction, turn right and, at the next one, continue straight ahead to rejoin the previous road, in front of the ‘Le Pigeonnier’ lodge.
(8) Follow this road to the left for 500 m. At the right-angled bend on the left, ignore the first path leading off to the right in the opposite direction, then, as you come out of the bend, take the next path uphill. Ignore the path leading off to the right in the opposite direction, which goes to the cemetery. Walk alongside it until you reach a road, the Chemin du Cimetière. Follow it to the right until you reach the junction in front of Saint-Hilaire Church.
(9) At the signpost, continue straight ahead. Enter the village of Viens, ignoring the Rue du Chemin Neuf on the left. On the Place du Ravelin, turn right onto the Rue du Faubourg to reach the Place du Petit Jeu, dominated by the Clock Tower. Allow yourself a good hour to wander through the narrow streets of this charming medieval Provençal village, exploring the Hôtel de Pontevès, Saint-Hilaire Church and the Castle, before returning to the Clock Tower.
(10) Turn right onto the Route de Banon. Pass the Chemin de Saint-Laurent on your left and, after 50 m, you’ll reach a viewpoint.
(11) At the signpost, leave the road and climb the steps of the path up the embankment on the left. Ignore the side paths. At the Fork in the road, keep to the right, then reach a T-junction (elevation 670). Continue straight ahead to rejoin the Route de Banon at the Col des Quatre Chemins (elevation 643).
(12) At the signpost, ignore the Route de Saint-Laurent on the left and, immediately afterwards, take the GR®6 along the Piste de Piégros, marked with a Yellow Cross. Stay on this main route to reach the Route de la Colle (elevation 562).
(13) At the signpost, head in the opposite direction, turning right, until you reach the sharp junction at La Cadenière.
(14) Turn left, against the flow of traffic, onto the Chemin de l’Ubac. Just before its hairpin bend to the right, take the path on the left. Immediately, ignore the path on the left, then ignore any side tracks. At the Fork in the road, keep to the right, then join the Piste du Colorado.
(15) At the signpost, follow it to the right. At the fork in the road, keep to the track on the left, and at the next fork in the road, take the shortcut to the left. After 120 m, rejoin the main track opposite. Ignoring the side paths, stay on this main route which winds through the ochre landscapes of the cliffs and fairy chimneys of the Colorado de Rustel. Cross the River La Doa and continue straight on to the visitors’ car park.
(16) Turn left onto Chemin de la Poste to reach a junction.
(17) At the sign, turn right onto the Chemin de Saint-Joseph. Cross the D22 carefully and you’ll come out onto the Boulevard du Colorado. Follow it to the left, ignoring the side streets, and join the D30 at the entrance to Rustel.
(18) At the sign, turn left towards the village with its Provençal Wild West feel. At a large square, leave the D30, which heads left towards Apt, and continue straight ahead along Rue du Château. At the fork in the road, follow the road as it curves to the right. Ignore the side streets and, as you come out of a left-hand bend, you’ll reach another fork in the road.
(19) At the sign, keep left onto Chemin de l’Olivier. At the junction (elevation 368), keep straight ahead and, at the fork in the road, continue straight on. After 400 m, at the junction (elevation 357), keep straight ahead until you reach a track. Take it to the left and, after a hairpin bend, reach a fork in the road.
(20) Ignore the path on the left and keep straight ahead. Pass a turn-off on the right and join the D34. Follow it to the right and, at its right-hand bend, reach a junction.
(21) At the signpost, leave the road and take the track on the left which joins the Chemin de la Bleyssonne. Continue straight ahead, cross the D179 carefully and, opposite, take the Chemin des Viaux to reach the D214. Follow it to the right and reach a junction (elevation 346).
(22) At the signpost, turn onto the path on the left. At the Fork in the road, continue straight ahead. Stay on the main path then, at the junction, turn right, leave the main path and follow the ascending track that continues from there. Take a wide bend to the left, ignoring the paths on the right. You’ll come to a junction of marked paths. Follow the GR®6 to the right, ignoring the side paths, until you reach a crossroads.
(23) At the signpost, stay on the GR®6 straight ahead. At the Fork in the road, keep left and, at the next Fork in the road, take the path on the right. At the junction with a track, turn left. Cross a rest area and, via its access road, come out onto the Route des Trecassats. Follow it down to the right until you reach a junction.
(24) At the signpost, stay on this road. Cross a bridge and, as you come out of the right-hand bend, turn left onto the path between two rocks. At the top, you’ll reach the Route du Stade. Take this road to the left to enter the village of Villars. After a sharp right-hand bend, you’ll reach a junction opposite the Town Hall.
(25) Turn left onto the Route d’Apt (D111). Continue straight ahead at the junction in front of the wash house, then at the next Fork in the road. Join the Route des Sources (D111a).
(26) Turn right onto this road and follow it for 50 m, before turning left onto the Route de la Tartelle (Tortelle on IGN maps). At the junction, 220 m further on, continue straight ahead onto the Chemin des Joumillons. Keep going straight ahead (north-west), ignoring any side paths, until you reach a road, the Chemin des Garbis.
(27) Follow this road, travelling against the flow of traffic to the left, and after 100 m, turn right (west) onto Chemin Romieu. Cross Chemin des Moulières (D943). Opposite, on the Chemin du Moulin à Huile, pass a street on your right and then another on your left, before reaching, 120 m further on, the entrance to the GCU campsite on your right (E) .
