Col de Salenton, via the waterfall and the Bérard valley

A lovely mountain walk, easy at first, at the bottom of a wooded and green valley, then difficult, on the mountainside, exposed to the sun. Interesting waterfall. Panoramic view from the pass.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From Buet station, cross the road and take a gently sloping dirt track opposite, slightly higher up (GR®® de Pays: yellow and red). Pass a ski lift and the village of La Poya. After a fairly easy 15-minute climb on a well-marked path, you will arrive at the impressive Bérard waterfall.

(1) After the waterfall, the path follows a river, the Eau de Bérard. It is not very well marked but it is impossible to get lost; just keep parallel to the river. It is a beautiful walk in a pretty green valley (swimming possible). The path gradually becomes stony but remains generally gentle, with a few short steeper sections. Little by little, the valley becomes drier but remains green and pleasant.
(2) Do not take the path on the right over a footbridge signposted "Sur le Rocher". Continue along the obvious path, keeping the river on your right. 200m further on, the path crosses to the other bank; the river is now on your left. The path gradually moves away from the Eau de Bérard, while remaining parallel to it. Continue along this path, which climbs gently up to a balcony above the river.

(3) From a concrete footbridge, the path becomes steeper for about 150 metres; after a few hairpin bends, you will reach the Refuge de la Pierre à Bérard (nice view from the terrace).

(4) From the refuge, the climb gets tougher, with a fairly steep slope on a stony path. Pass to the right of the refuge, following the path that climbs to the right, signposted "Le Buet / Col de Salenton".

(5) Change of terrain: from here, walk through a chaos of large boulders, with no marked path. Follow the markings carefully: yellow-red markers (GRP®®), yellow plaques and cairns.

(6) At a crossroads, at the foot of a grey scree slope, note the red paint markings on the rocks: "REF BERARD" downhill, "BUET" to the right on level ground. Follow the unmarked path to the left, which climbs up the scree slope. You will soon reach the Col de Salenton (climb up the hill for a better view).

(7) Return by the same route to the Buet railway station (S/E).

Up to this point (6), this route is the same as the "Le Buet from Vallorcine" hike published on Visorando. It is therefore possible to complete this hike by climbing Buet, a peak over 3,000 metres high.
Please note! This hike, classified as difficult, has an elevation gain of approximately 1,250 metres. For the Buet, allow for an additional 600 metres of elevation gain and 3 hours of walking (round trip), which is very difficult in a single day.

A beautiful hike, quite popular as there are several routes starting from Le Buet. At this time of year, there was no snow, the autumn colours were beautiful, and we spotted a few ibex. It was quite windy when we reached the pass. You can continue for another 50 metres of elevation gain along the ridge, turning left when you reach the pass, for a panoramic view that is well worth the effort.

A pleasant hike to the refuge, considering the weather, with no major difficulties, done in the rain (which explains why there were so few people). The waterfall and, above all, the facilities for getting close to it are impressive but safe. No wildlife encountered on this route.

Fog and rain with a few sunny spells, a beautiful hike. We made it to the refuge and then turned back because there was too much snow to continue

Hike done with children on Saturday afternoon, climbing up to the refuge, where we received a very warm welcome from the entire team. After a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, we headed for the pass. The going was fairly easy and uneventful, with successive changes in terrain.
With children, it's best to do this over two days, otherwise it can easily be done in a day.
The hike description is accurate and the trail is well marked.

Put on your walking shoes and enjoy the walk.

Beautiful hike, magnificent and varied landscapes.
Very busy at weekends due to the difficult Buet route.
