(S/E) From Buet station, cross the road and take a gently sloping dirt track opposite, slightly higher up (GR®® de Pays: yellow and red). Pass a ski lift and the village of La Poya. After a fairly easy 15-minute climb on a well-marked path, you will arrive at the impressive Bérard waterfall.
(1) After the waterfall, the path follows a river, the Eau de Bérard. It is not very well marked but it is impossible to get lost; just keep parallel to the river. It is a beautiful walk in a pretty green valley (swimming possible). The path gradually becomes stony but remains generally gentle, with a few short steeper sections. Little by little, the valley becomes drier but remains green and pleasant.
(2) Do not take the path on the right over a footbridge signposted "Sur le Rocher". Continue along the obvious path, keeping the river on your right. 200m further on, the path crosses to the other bank; the river is now on your left. The path gradually moves away from the Eau de Bérard, while remaining parallel to it. Continue along this path, which climbs gently up to a balcony above the river.
(3) From a concrete footbridge, the path becomes steeper for about 150 metres; after a few hairpin bends, you will reach the Refuge de la Pierre à Bérard (nice view from the terrace).
(4) From the refuge, the climb gets tougher, with a fairly steep slope on a stony path. Pass to the right of the refuge, following the path that climbs to the right, signposted "Le Buet / Col de Salenton".
(5) Change of terrain: from here, walk through a chaos of large boulders, with no marked path. Follow the markings carefully: yellow-red markers (GRP®®), yellow plaques and cairns.
(6) At a crossroads, at the foot of a grey scree slope, note the red paint markings on the rocks: "REF BERARD" downhill, "BUET" to the right on level ground. Follow the unmarked path to the left, which climbs up the scree slope. You will soon reach the Col de Salenton (climb up the hill for a better view).
(7) Return by the same route to the Buet railway station (S/E).
