The Mont Buet loop

Starting from Buet, this is a large loop in a very rocky landscape. After the Refuge de la Pierre in Bérard, the ascent of Mont Buet and the Cheval Blanc pass, the circuit makes a short detour into Switzerland to visit the dinosaur site. The return journey is via the Col de la Terrasse, the Refuge de Loriaz and the hamlet of Couteray

⚠️ This route crosses the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve. Please respect the regulations in force. See practical information.

Description of the walk

Park at the Buet station car park.

(S/E) Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and take the path opposite towards the Bérard waterfall. Once at La Poya, turn left and then right to continue the circuit and reach the waterfall.

(1) Continue to follow the path that runs alongside the Eau de Bérard, towards the Refuge de la Pierre à Bérard. You will reach a fork at the footbridge that crosses the torrent.

(2) Follow the path to the left without crossing the stream; you will cross it 150 m further on to reach the left bank. You will arrive at the Refuge de la Pierre à Bérard.

(3) Turn right to the north-west, towards Col de Salenton. Follow the somewhat uneven path marked by yellow rectangles. You will reach a junction.

(4) Leave the Col de Salenton on your left, continue to the right (north) and follow the path around the Aiguille de Salenton. Higher up, the path slopes to the right and rises steeply to reach the Arête de Mortine.

(5) Continue along the path to the right, heading north-northeast, pass the Abri de Pictet and reach the summit of Mont Buet at an altitude of 3,098 metres.

(6) Follow the Arête du Buet (north) along a steep path with cables and an aerial passage. Pass the Col des Èves and reach the Col du Génévrier before arriving at the peak of the same name.

(7) Continue straight ahead (north-east), leaving the Refuge du Grenairon on your left: the path becomes difficult to see. Continue, making sure you keep heading north-east towards the Cheval Blanc.

(8) Turn right (east) and start a steep descent on a dirt trail equipped with cables.

(9) When you reach the Pointe des Corbeaux, turn left and descend towards the dinosaur tracks, first east, then north. You will reach the site of the tracks.

(10) Continue on the trail, which follows the contour line.

(11) Turn right towards the Col de la Terrasse, reach an intersection and turn right again to continue climbing above the Lac Vert below on your right. Reach the pass.

(12) Continue along the trail towards the Loriaz chalets, with a fairly steep and earthy descent just below the pass. Reach the Refuge de Loriaz, where several trails intersect.

(13) Continue south-east, passing close to the Croix de Loriaz, then turn right and follow a series of hairpin bends leading to a fork.

(14) Take the hairpin bend to the right, cross the stream de Loriaz bridge and continue the descent until you reach a radio mast.

(15) Head left, turn right at the intersection ahead and, after making an S-bend, rejoin the tarmac road at Route du Chanté d'en Haut.

(16) Turn right and continue downhill, follow the shortcut on the left and rejoin the road further down. Continue left, negotiate the right-hand bend and join the D1506 (Route du Col).

(17) Turn right and drive carefully up the departmental road to the station car park (S/E).

Notes

Water is available at the Refuge de la Pierre in Bérard and at the Loriaz chalets.

Avoid this hike the day after heavy rain, as the earthy parts can be slippery.

There is a car park above the station car park. It is best to do this hike from late June to early July, as heavy snowfall can cover the dinosaur tracks.

It can be quite cool at the top of Buet when it is windy.

The hike takes place in two nature reserves, the Vallon de Bérard and the Aiguilles Rouges: take the usual precautions.

This route passes through multiple protected areas, which may be subject to special regulations:

First of all, thank you for this incredible route. However, I would advise you to do the loop in the opposite direction as it is easier to climb the very steep aerial and cable-assisted sections. If you still wish to do it this way, here is my feedback: I would like to emphasise the difficulty of this route. Do not take this hike lightly. The app indicates 13 hours of walking, and the website says 7 hours. Allow at least 15 hours for the complete tour with a bivouac bag at a good pace. You will encounter quite a few people up to the Pierre à Bérard refuge, but far fewer after that (except in summer). If you plan to bivouac, you can do so at the top of the Col de Salenton, with a breathtaking view of Mont Blanc, but abandon the idea in case of bad weather (rain, wind, snow). Be sure to fill up with water at the refuge before starting the climb, as you won't find any more water until you reach the dinosaur tracks several kilometres away.
Be careful once you have climbed the Buet, as the descent requires extreme vigilance and concentration. The cable passages should only be used in the opposite direction, as the descent leaves no room for error. Do not attempt this route if you are afraid of heights, easily frightened or tired. (Check that no one is climbing up before you start the descent). The last cable-assisted and aerial sections are on the descent from the Pointe de Genévrier. Once you have completed these, take care on the descent from the Col de la Terrasse, which is very vertiginous for the first 50 metres (there are no chains or other safety equipment to secure the descent) and the paths are difficult to see, strewn with rocks and earth, making them very slippery. Apart from these points, there is nothing else of note, and the views are breathtaking.
I recommend this route only if you have good hiking experience and are in very good physical condition.
