Park at the Quatre Chemins car park, shortly after Lac de Freydières, in the municipality of Revel.
(S/E) Continue on foot along the road that climbs and quickly turns into a path to reach another car park.
(1) Keep right on the wide path, following the signs for "Refuge de la Pra - Lac Crozet". The climb is steep and not very interesting, a nice contrast to the rest of the hike. You will reach a new crossroads.
(2). Keep to the right. The path narrows and winds through the forest. Gradually, the forest thins out and you arrive at Rocher Mottin: your first view of the valley, including Crolles below and its famous "Dent".
(3) Continue climbing along this pleasant path to Lac du Crozet.
(4) When you reach the lake below (large column of water), keep to the left of the climb to avoid having to cross the spillway. Continue climbing to the Col de la Pra, which is indicated by a sign once you arrive.
(5) Then descend towards the Refuge de la Pra, located 200 m below: there is an outdoor water source when the refuge is open.
(6) From the refuge, head towards Lac Merlat, passing to the right of the meadow. Reach Lac Merlat and follow its southern shore.
(7) Change direction by turning right (north) and climb up to tackle the Grand Colon. This is a steep and difficult climb with very small switchbacks, but it ends fairly quickly and you will reach the summit.
(8) Enjoy the breathtaking view of the Grenoble Valley with the Chartreuse, Vercors and Mont Blanc in the background if you tilt your head to the other side. Descend into the grassy area. Follow the path or cut straight across (if the weather is good), then rejoin the path when it branches off to the left.
(9) Turn left onto the path that bends right further on and comes to a fork.
(10) Continue to the right, heading towards the Baraque du Colon.
(11) Once at the pastoral hut, continue downhill into the forest. Stay as much as possible on the small paths marked with orange dots until you reach the Baraque des Carriers.
(12) Take the wide path on the right leading directly to the Quatre Chemins car park (S/E).
, which allows you to warm up before tackling the hard part. The climb to the Grand Colon is varied and long. The summit only appears at the end... you've been hoping for it for a long time. The final dome is quite lunar and the final view is breathtaking. The descent through the scree towards Lake Merlat is fairly easy, with some rolling terrain at times.
