Col de Clausis by its lake

A fine hike, not too strenuous, with a pretty lake in a high-mountain landscape. The last part, a little harder, takes you up to 2800m and offers magnificent views. A few marmottes can be seen on the way to the pass.

Description of the walk

Start: Bergerie du Bois Noir car park.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the torrent upstream and cross it on a wide bridge which continues along a dirt and gravel track. Follow this track for about 1200m, until you reach the Étable des Génisses.

(1) Take the path between the stable and the house, which runs due South towards the larch trees. It joins the Torrent de Clausis.

(2) The path then begins to climb steeply, winding along the torrent gorge. A little later, you'll reach some alpine pastures, and after crossing the torrent easily, you'll come to Lac de Clausis. Pass by it on the right bank and join the path heading south towards the pass.

(3) After an almost flat, grassy section, you reach the scree slopes at the bottom of the valley, where the gradient is a little steeper. A few minutes before arriving at the pass, the slope is harder and finishes with a few hairpin bends.

At the Col de Clausis, turn right and head for the rocky outcrop to the west, which is easily accessible and offers magnificent views.

(4) From the Col de Clausis, take the same path back down to the car park (S/E).

A very beautiful hike that allows you to discover varied landscapes.
The climb is steady and the trail is easy to follow. A few patches of dampness make the scree at the top muddy, but it is still easy to cross.
Many streams are still active in mid-June but are easy to ford, and the last two small snowfields that need to be crossed will soon disappear, unlike those at the bottom of the stream.
The Clausis torrent creates a pretty waterfall in a narrow gorge.

This is the second time I've done this walk (the last was 18 years ago...), and each time it's been a great pleasure. The setting is superb from start to finish! You gradually move from the forest to the mountain pastures and then on to a mineral world.

The lake is quite busy. However, there are very few people between the lake and the pass.

A very pleasant hike, moderately busy and easy. Beware of aggressive sheepdogs at the Lavine hut. All you have to do is remain impassive and speak to them gently, and they will eventually calm down.

At the bottom of the Christillan valley, this lake and pass are less frequented than those in the Melezet valley. Lots of marmots in the meadows above the lake. We did it on a grey day on 16 July, and the rain caught up with us on the descent to the lake, but it didn't bother us.

A very nice walk with lots of viewpoints. The marmots were nowhere to be seen that day. Thank you very much.

Very nice walk. We didn't encounter any crowds at the pass. The climb up to the pass gives a good idea of how the landscape changes from mountain pastures to minerals. Very pleasant and accessible to as many people as possible. Thank you for this walk.
