Description of the walk

Start from the Auberge du Pont de Lanau, near the bridge over the Truyère (the inn was closed and up for sale when we were there).
Parking available at the swimming pool or the inn.

(S/E) Set off to the right of the inn, towards “Les Pourrets”, and follow the signs and the green markings of the Chemin des Écoliers, leaving the road further on to the left. Be careful, it’s uphill, and there may be obstacles to negotiate along the way.

(1) You’ll arrive at the village of Gros. Turn left and follow the main road. Pass a beautiful house on your left, continue and leave the road on your left towards “La Taillade”. Look out for two green markings at the next junction; take the left-hand one (there’s another sign pointing towards “La Taillade”). At the next junction, stay on the road to the right.

(2) After 150m, take the path on the left (note that the green signpost is behind you) and follow this path towards Labastide, enjoying superb views. Keep well to the left as you reach the village,

(3) Pass a small hut on the left and continue along a dirt track that descends towards the Ruisseau de la Tourette (you’ll see Orcières opposite).

(4) Please note! Once at the bottom, do not go straight on but turn left and cross the stream via a metal footbridge. Head back up via a shaded path.

(5) Join a road at the bottom of Orcières and turn right towards the village. A visit is recommended as there are some very pretty houses. Walk through the village and leave it via the road.

(6) After a house with a view of the valley, turn right onto the green-marked path. Follow this easy path, which leads to the campsite near Neuvéglise.

(7) Join the road (cheese shop at the bottom on the left; you can buy cheese there) then the D48 and the village centre on the right.

(8) Just after the post office, take the path on the right, passing the sewage treatment plant. Continue along this path (turning round for a lovely view of Neuvéglise) until you reach the hamlet of Lavergne.

(9) Turn left onto the road.

(10) About 250 metres further on, take the path on the right.

(11) Keep left at the next junction and head towards a house and a reservoir. Take the path on the right – be careful, it’s a steep descent. Continue straight along the path until you reach the Route de Gros.

(12) Follow it to the left. Just past the campsite bins, take a narrow path on the right (beware of steep steps) to return to the starting point next to the Auberge du Pont de Lanau (S/E) via the Route de Lanau.

A lovely walk, but unfortunately the paths aren’t very well maintained, which meant I had to navigate through lots of tall grass, brambles and the like at various points. This makes the walk less enjoyable, though it would be lovely if everything were kept up to standard.

We passed through some lovely villages; not too difficult apart from the first section in terms of elevation gain (the ‘Chemin des Écoliers’ in particular).

I can confirm the arrival point at Lanau mentioned in previous comments; the bins are no longer there. You need to take a small path on the other side of the road from the campsite entrance (to a small car park via some high steps that aren’t very visible).

I recommend wearing trousers to avoid bites and other nuisances

A route we took after two days of rain. The footpath had turned into a stream...
The Lanau inn is disused. However, you can still park there.
The only correction to the description is that the bins at Lanau campsite (practically at the end of the route) are situated further up. Take the narrow path at the campsite entrance.
Overall impression: a lovely route; the moss-covered schoolchildren’s path is superb, and the villages and hamlets are full of charm. Neuvéglise, on the other hand, is lacking. Beautiful views. I recommend it!
GPX track is spot on ;-))

A lovely walk. However, we walked through pastures and along paths with quite tall grass. There were loads of ticks. Despite that, we had a lovely day with beautiful scenery. Highly recommended.

The only slight downside is the approach to Lanau: from the bins onwards, it’s not very clear (private property?)
