Near the exit from Friesen, heading towards Hindlingen, park in the car park of the multi-purpose hall.
(S/E) Pass to the right of the building, on the grass, and walk a few metres towards the Largue.
Return to the car park and continue left onto Principale, towards the centre of Friesen. Take the first right, Rue du Cuir. At the end of the street, turn left and then right, 100 metres further on, into Rue de l'Église.
At the foot of the church, continue left and join the main road (D17). Turn right for a few metres, then left into Rue Notre-Dame. At the fork, continue left along Rue du Grunenwald.
(1) In front of the chapel, take the wide path on the right that climbs into the forest (mountain bike trail). Further on, the path passes between two ponds lined with conifers, then runs alongside huge meadows and fields of grain, the result of land consolidation.
Stay on the main path, continuing south, and after three ponds on the left, you will reach the D17I. Cross the road and pass in front of the restaurant "Au Sapin" to arrive at the pilgrimage chapel, Notre-Dame de Gruenenwald.
(2) Pass the open-air altar and, at the fork immediately after, take the left-hand branch (mountain bike trail). Pass between two ponds.
(3) After 300 metres, turn left towards a small wood.
Continue along the gravel path which, after three changes of direction, becomes paved and descends to the right towards Ueberstrass (population 368 in 2012).
(4) At the stop sign, turn left, then take the right-hand bend towards Friesen. Pass a church on your left and continue to the pumping station located at the junction with Rue de Largitzen.
(5) Leave the road and climb left towards the chapel. Go around it to reach a gravel path overlooking Ueberstrass, which you take to the right. Continue to a fork at the edge of the forest.
(6) Turn right to descend into the forest. 80 metres further on, in front of a disused shed, turn left. The path turns right and descends via Rue des Romains to the departmental road (Rue Principale).
Take the pavement on the left and head towards Friesen. Continue straight ahead on this same street to return to the car park (S/E).
A delightful walk in fine weather between ponds and chapels, including the beautifully decorated Notre Dame de Gruenenwald, which is open to visitors.
