Route of the ponds

This route takes you through the charming hamlet of Chantereine and follows a section ofthefamousGR®13. It allows you to discover the ponds of La Culotte, La Brionnerie, Les Bergeries and La Diablière. Tales and legends have been passed down over time and still frighten us today... Beware of Father Wolf on Rue Neuve! He was said to be a "witch". That's how spellcasters were referred to here in Puisaye...

Description of the walk

(S) From Sommecaise church, take the small road that leads to La Vieille Ferté via the charming hamlet of Chanteraine.

(1) At the crossroads after the hamlet, turn left towards Rue Neuve, where "Father Loup" used to live. You will then be on the famousGR®13 trail, which runs alongside the Culotte pond on your left (2). Continue straight ahead at the next crossroads until you reach a fork in the road.

(3) Turn left onto the path that leads to Péruseau, a small stream that flows into the Ouanne at Charny. Go up the CD57 on the left for about 200 metres and turn right towards the hamlet of Les Coiffards. Cross the hamlet and, at the end of the road, take the path on the left, which runs alongside the woods and offers a beautiful view of the hamlet of L'Ermite and Perreux.

(4) Once you reach the tarmac road, turn left. This path leads to another hamlet in Perreux, Les Pantouches.

(5) Then take the path on the left, which passes in front of the farm and, a little further on, enters the woods, with the hamlet of La Brionnerie and its pond on your left and the Bergeries pond on your right (6).
Here you will see a blacksmith's shop. There were many charcoal burners in the area, and the industry flourished until the end of the 19th century. When you leave the woods, you will find yourself in the hamlet of Les Fourchons.

(7) Take the small road on your right, which passes through the hamlet of Les Bergeries and finally Les Bouviers.

(8) At the end of this hamlet, take the path on your left and cross the CD57 again. A little further on, you will cross the woods with the Diablière pond on your right::9:.
When you leave the woods, take the first path on your right, which will take you back to Chanteraine, then turn right to return to the church and the starting point.

Notes

There are few shelters along this route, except when passing through hamlets.
No special equipment is required other than good walking shoes, as theGR® trail through the woods can sometimes be "a little damp", as we say locally, meaning that the path can be muddy in places.
The elevation gain is very low, making this a gentle hike that is accessible to all.

Worth a visit

When you leave theGR®13and rejoin the CD57, if you follow the CD57 to the right for about 200 to 300 metres, you will find yourself at "la ferme de Perreux", a local producer of goat's cheese, poultry, meat and charcuterie, black pudding, etc. Michel and his wife Corinne will be delighted to let you sample their products if you mention our name... take advantage of this opportunity... you'll want to come back.

This is a very pleasant walk with beautiful forests and lovely views. I don't think you should do this walk after heavy rain.

We went on a hike without seeing a single pond!
We made a lot of mistakes.
In the absence of signage on these small roads, there should be more "markers" (such as buildings, road configurations, etc.).

Easy hike, some lovely views if you get close to the ponds. Quite a few roads for my liking, but fortunately they are not very busy.

Hello,
A pleasant hike for a "novice" walker; half tarmac, half dirt track, which is nice for resting your knees. What's more, thanks to the very detailed route description, it is possible to shorten the walk and return to the starting point if necessary.
However, the forest section is tricky in wet weather (i.e. very often), as forestry machinery and groups of quad bikes damage the path with huge ruts filled with water. There is a lot of mud, but the undergrowth is clean and clear, making it easy to walk on.
I really enjoyed this walk, and so did my little dog.
Thank you.
