Route of the two ponds in Saint-Gervais d'Auvergne

Public transport: Train to Riom-Châtel-Guyon SNCF station, then bus line P62 – Riom-Saint-Gervais – Saint-Gervais Mairie stop.

Car: Parking spaces are available on Rue du Castel in Saint-Gervais d’Auvergne. Further spaces are also available at Place Raymond Gauvin and Place de la Mairie.

(S/E) Take Rue du Castel and proceed to the four-way junction,

(1) Continue straight ahead onto Rue du Pont aux Canes, then follow Avenue Jules Lécuyer as it continues. Drive past the Lycée Agricole des Combrailles and arrive at the roundabout.

(2) Take the second exit (D227), cross at the pedestrian crossing then turn right towards Pionsat and Gouttières. Cross the old railway line, pass the house on the left and, immediately afterwards, take the path on the left which avoids the large junction. Cross the D532 at the pedestrian crossing then take the small road opposite towards Les Rochettes. At the top of the hill, turn around to admire the view of the Chaîne des Puys.

(3) Continue straight ahead, leaving the road towards Chez Pigot on your left, followed by a track.

(4) At the junction, ignore the road on the right leading to Corps, continue straight on and head down to the Moulin de l’Arche (private property). Cross the river, veer slightly to the left to go up a track, which is very grassy at the start.

(5) At the junction, take the track on the right and follow it straight on until the next junction at a small wooden wayside shrine.

(6) Turn right. Follow the path, passing two tracks on the right in turn, until you reach the junction with the D227.

(7) Turn right onto the county road and follow it carefully for about fifty metres. Then take the road on the left to reach the Étang du Masmont.

(8) Leave the private track on your left and head up to the right to reach the hamlet of Masmont; walk through it. At the junction near the lodge, leave the road on your left and continue straight ahead. Pass under the bridge of the old railway line. Further on, on your right, leave the track leading to Puy Bernard and continue along the road, which subsequently merges with another road coming from the left.

(9) Continue to the right, reach the hamlet of Mazières and cross through it to reach the junction with the D987.

(10) Turn right and follow the main road carefully for about 230 m.

(11) Turn right towards the Étang Philippe campsite (former Michelin enamel signpost). Go round Étang Philippe either to the right or to the left and return to the D987. Just before reaching this road, take the dirt track on the right which runs alongside it. Continue to the roundabout.

(12) Go round the roundabout on the right and take the second right, Rue du Docteur Beaujeard, to the four-way junction at the start.

(1) Turn left onto Rue du Castel to return to the car park or the Saint-Gervais Mairie bus stop (S/E).

Footwear: walking shoes or trainers.
Difficulty: route along paths, tracks or roads with no difficulty. Take care on the section running alongside the D987.
