The Sioule Gorges

In a sumptuous setting, dominated on one side by the imposing Château de Chouvigny and on the other by the ghostly Château Rocher, you will discover a route that is well worth a detour for its fishing and tourist attractions.

Description of the walk

From Riom, take the D227 towards Manzat until you reach the entrance to Saint-Gervais-d'Auvergne, then take the D531 (lorry diversion) towards Le Bouchet for 3 km and turn right towards Le Prat.

(S/E) From the esplanade at Le Prat, head south and cross the hamlet. Then turn left at the intersection.

(1) When you reach a road, turn right, pass the hamlet of Lêbre and continue to the fountain-wash house in Le Bouchet.

(2) Head downhill to the left towards the Queuille dam and take the first path on the right.

(3) At a hairpin bend to the left, take the small path opposite. Descend the hillside through a beautiful oak forest until you reach a crossroads (not very visible).

(4) Continue downhill opposite, past the ruins of Murat farm and reach the banks of the Sioule in the heart of the Queuille meander.

(5) Return to the previous crossroads.

(4) Take the path on the right through the forest (a beautiful path overlooking the Sioule).

(6) Come out onto a road and follow it to the right.

(7) At the Queuille dam, take a path on the left above the building. Walk along this path for a long time until you reach the hamlet of Bas-de-Lacot.

(8) Continue right along a path under the trees to reach the Pont de Chambon bridge.

(9) Cross the bridge over the Sioule. Immediately turn left onto the D227A. About 100 metres after the disused factory, follow a grassy path to the left. After the first houses, continue left along the Sioule. At the large pine trees, turn right to rejoin the road.

(10) Follow the road to the left and cross the Sioule again. At the end of the footbridge, take the road to the right.

(11) In the village at the end of the square (caution: another greenPR® ), turn left and climb up to the D227.

(12) Cross the road and continue straight ahead along a path that climbs steeply through the woods. This will take you to the hamlet of Grandval.

(13) Take the tarmac path on the left and ignore the paths on the left (view of the Cube valley, the bell tower of Saint-Gervais and the Combrailles plateau).

(14) You will come to a road. Follow it to the right and turn onto the first path on the right. After 1 km, at the end of a left-hand bend, you will reach a fork.

(15) Take a wide path on the right. Join a small road and follow it to the left.

(16) Cross another small road and take the path opposite. At the crossroads, cut across the D531 and continue straight ahead to reach Le Prat (S/E).

I was very disappointed with this hike. The description is very sales-oriented... In the end, there was a view of the meanders, but otherwise the trails were barely maintained (tall grass, brambles, lots of trees across the paths, although that doesn't bother me too much...). Most of the hike is in the woods, so there are no views.

Beautiful hike. Very well signposted. No risk of getting lost.
No particular difficulties. Almost the entire hike is in the woods. Few paved roads.
However, two-thirds of the route is very poorly maintained, with brambles and uprooted trees slowing down progress and spoiling the fun a little. Long and strenuous climb between points 11 and 13.
Good to know:
Picnic table under the trees, halfway along the route, on the outskirts of the village of Le Bas de Lacot.
Picnic table at the entrance to the village of Granval.
Several cafés when crossing Chateauneuf-les-Bains.

An extraordinary hike with splendid views over the Sioule Gorges.
However, the difficulty level is rated as "medium", which is a bit of an understatement, as there are some endless climbs and sections where you are on stony paths with the ravine not far away. It should be pointed out that you need to be an experienced hiker. We regularly hike between 10 and 30 km, and I really felt it the next day!

We started the hike from point 11 (Chateauneuf les Bains, where there is more parking space), which allowed us to tackle most of the elevation gain at the beginning of the hike.
The entire section in the Sioule Gorges between points 5 and 9 was poorly maintained, with tall grass and few real views of the Sioule.

Started at point 10 to begin with the steep incline.
Overall, it was a pleasant hike, although the section through the fields on the plateau was a bit monotonous.
Don't forget to go to the end of the meander at point 5, which is the perfect place for a lunch break.
Be aware that half of the hike is completely unshaded.

Very enjoyable hike. We followed it, as suggested in a previous comment, starting at point 11, which is a very good option as it allows you to tackle the main climb at the start and arrive at the water's edge about halfway through. On the second half (between points 6 and 11), it's just a shame not to be closer to the river, which you can only just make out between the trees.
We didn't meet a single person on the way!

A superb hike, done in summer with my dog, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
I highly recommend starting from Châteauneuf (point 11). This allows you to start with the biggest climb and arrive at the Sioule river right in the middle of the hike (the best place to eat and take a dip).
There are different landscapes and types of road.
I didn't meet a soul!

A very beautiful hike for the first 15 kilometres, easy to follow thanks to the green markings painted along the route. The last part through the fields is pretty, but a little less interesting. Please note: the photo of the meander illustrating the description was taken from the other side of the route, so this view is not part of it. However, there are many beautiful views of the Sioule.
