Description of the walk

In the village of Ayat-sur-Sioule, park in the car park near the town hall, close to the Desaix monument.
Yellow markings, dashes and smallPR®® signs for the Balirando “Les côtes” trail, except on two short return sections, mentioned in the description.

(S/E) To the right of the Desaix monument, head down towards the church, then follow the street to the right and leave the village. At the left-hand bend in the street, continue straight on along the path, then along the trail that extends from it, until you reach a road.

(1) Follow it straight on. At the junction with another road, cross over and take the path opposite, cross the road again and continue straight ahead. The path winds downwards and leads to a small road, overlooking the Sioule.

(2) For a short, unmarked return walk, head down to the right to reach the Sioule at the bridge and Moulin de Braynant. Retrace your steps.

(2) Continue straight on along this quiet little road, which runs along the Sioule, ignoring the road on the left that climbs towards Ronchaigne.

(3) Pass the hamlet of Les Côtes; a sign points to Moulin de la Fayolle on the other side of the river. Continue along the road to reach the hamlet of Gaby.

(4) Continue straight on to cross the hamlet, ignoring a road branching off to the left, and carry on along the path that runs alongside the road. Further on, ignore a path to the left.

(5) When the path begins to move away from the river, continue straight on for a return trip through a wet meadow, along an unmarked path that runs alongside the Sioule. The path gradually narrows and eventually meets the river at a very pretty spot, ideal for a break. Retrace your steps and rejoin the marked path.

(5) Turn right onto the path that climbs through the undergrowth. At a bend in the path, near a broom heath, ignore the forest track that heads straight on. Pass an antenna on your left (not shown on the IGN map) and emerge from the woods. You’ll reach the hamlet of Longesserre and come to a road.

(6) Follow it through the hamlet, then continue along the road, ignoring a path on the left as you leave the hamlet, and two paths on the right further on.

(7) About 150 m after passing an abandoned farm on your left, turn onto a path on the right. Further on, it bends to the left and joins a road. Follow it to reach the hamlet of Le Puy.

(8) At the junction, turn left, then keep right at the next two junctions. Stay on the road to reach the village of Ayat, walk past the cemetery, then turn left towards the church. Opposite, take the path up towards the town hall (S/E).

Circular walk through the countryside with sweeping views of the Sioule valley, featuring a section along a riverside path but not right at the water’s edge, except in certain places.
Braynant Mill
Ayat is the birthplace of Imperial General Louis Charles Antoine Desaix. A fine monument dedicated to him stands in the heart of the village.

A beautiful route, apart from the Menele cave, which is impossible to find in the rugged terrain.
The village of Ayat is well worth a visit; it is very beautiful and well maintained.

A pleasant hike, albeit somewhat uneven. A steep descent right from the start, flat and paved for two-thirds of the way, and a very steep climb to finish. The arrival in the village is nice. Too much paved road.

My husband and I went to scout out this walk so we could do it as a family; as the weather wasn’t great and we were short on time, we shortened the route by taking the road that you’re supposed to leave at point 4 when crossing the hamlet of Gaby; it quickly turns into a wide track that climbs through the woods to reach Le Puy at point 8. The path down to the bridge over the Sioule is lovely, and the Braynant mill is well worth a visit.
We’ll do it again in the autumn to enjoy the colours of the foliage and the reflections on the Sioule, which should make this walk even more pleasant, particularly along the road section.

A lovely Sunday morning walk; the little village at the starting point is very pretty, and the walk itself is very pleasant. We didn’t see a soul, but that’s surely down to the weather. The paths seem to have been marked out recently. One minor downside is that a large part of the walk is along roads, so do take care if you’re walking with dogs, even though they don’t seem very busy.
