Departure from the large car park near the Mayenne:
- coming from Louverné, the large car park is on the right before the bridge;
- coming from the village of Saint-Jean-sur-Mayenne, cross the bridge over the Mayenne and you will immediately find the car park on the left.
(S/E) Facing the Mayenne, turn right (north) onto the towpath and follow the river on your left.
(1) Turn right just before the Mégnannerie lock onto a road.
(2) Follow the D250 road to the right until you turn left towards a place called Le Ronceray. Go up a hill and continue straight ahead on the path. Leave the hamlet of Les Guitonnières on your right and continue along the path. Ignore a turn-off on the right and you will come to a road.
(3) Cross the road and continue straight ahead on the sunken lane. At the next junction, go straight ahead.
(4) At the fork, turn right, following the yellow markings and the red sign for "VTT4 route". At the next junction (elevation 123), turn right towards Louverné. Pass La Bigrie on your right and continue along the road.
(5) In the bend, leave the road and take thesecond path on the right towards "Le halage à 2.5km". Join a road and follow it to the left.
(6) Cross the D131 road and continue straight ahead on the path.
(7) Turn right onto the road that descends towards Saint-Jean-Sur-Mayenne. At the end, turn left and follow the D131 road along the dirt car park. Join the towpath, turn right and pass under the bridge. A hundred metres further on, you will find the car park where you started (S/E).
A very beautiful hike! Be careful, though, because after rain, the route is almost impassable! Save it for summer or spring when the weather is nice. We tried it after several days of rain, and despite the beautiful weather that day, our shoes (and our socks and feet!) were covered in mud!
