Route de découverte de Luxeuil-les-Bains

Luxeuil-les-Bains is one of the many spa towns in the Haute-Saône. This route allows you to discover all its heritage, such as the abbey, the Basilica of Saint-Pierre, the Tour des Échevins and the thermal baths of Luxeuil. Many of the buildings are constructed from local stone sourced from the Vosges. This charming route allows you to wander around this spa town for several hours. You might even return with some Luxeuil ham. This walk is classified as ‘moderate’ as it is over 10 kilometres long and may not be suitable for younger children.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Luxeuil-les-Bains station.

(S/E) From the SNCF station, head down towards the roundabout and take the first right onto Rue de la Gare. At the next roundabout, take the left-hand exit, then turn immediately right onto Rue Victor Hugo. Follow this road round the bend until you reach the traffic lights and Rue Jules Jeanneney.

(1) Walk up this street, on the left, to reach Luxeuil Abbey.

(2) Take Rue du Sergent Bonnot on the right to reach the Basilica of Saint-Pierre, the statue of Saint-Colomban and the bronze sculpture by Jacky Dedier. Turn your back on the sculpture and take the street opposite, which crosses Place de la République. Walk past the Maison Bretons-d'Amblans and the Hôtel Pusel. Immediately, at the hotel, take Rue de la Tour du Bailli on the right, and follow it to the roundabout, passing the Maison à l'Oriflamme.

(3) At the roundabout, take the first street on the right, Rue Henry Guy. Walk past the war memorial and leave Rue du Sergent Bonnot on your right immediately afterwards. At the next junction, keep right to follow Rue Henry Guy and walk past the former Depreux spinning mill, now the Cobra Europe building.

(4) Continue along the street and follow it to the end. Then turn left onto Rue Aristide Briand, which you must follow up to reach a statue of the Virgin of the Mission on the right.

(5) Stay on the road and take Impasse Léon Bourgeois on the left. At the end of the cul-de-sac, turn left to cross the Morbief. When you reach the motorhome park, cross Rue Gambetta to take the footpath leading to the Étang de la Poche.

(6) Stay on the right-hand side of the pond. Once on the other side, turn left, then take a first turn right then left to follow Rue Saint-Colomban, then, opposite, Rue des Martyrs de la Résistance, until you reach the roundabout.

(7) Cross over to Rue Sainte-Anne, then enter the cemetery on the left. At the end of the first green plot on the left, turn left. At the end of the path, continue to the right, then immediately left before turning right, where you will see the Monument to the War of 1870.

(8) Turn back and take the second path on the left. At the end, first turn right then left, then go left, then right, down the path, to reach another path at the far end of the cemetery. Then walk along the wall on the left, and turn left again, onto the first path, to see the First World War Memorial and the French Memorial Plot.

(9) Walk back along the wall. Once you have spotted the end of the Carré du Souvenir Français, turn left towards it, then continue straight ahead. Then turn right at the ossuary and right again at the end of the path. Leave the cemetery to reach Rue du Souvenir Français. Turn left onto the street and head for the roundabout you passed on the way there.

(3) Turn right onto Rue Henry Guy and, at the next roundabout, turn right onto Rue Carnot, passing in front of Place du Général de Gaulle. You will reach the junction with Rue des Thermes.

(10) Continue up Rue de Grammont until you reach the cross situated almost at the edge of the town, on the right-hand side.

(11) Return to Rue des Thermes.

(10) Turn right onto this street. At the junction, turn left onto Boulevard Richet to reach the temple.

(12) Turn left into Rue de Neuvelle, then left again onto Rue Marquiset. Take the first right onto Rue Jouffroy, then right again onto Rue Victor Genoux, and you’ll arrive in front of the Tour des Échevins.

(13) Continue straight ahead to the junction you passed on the way there.

(2) Continue straight on for a few metres, then turn right onto Rue des Remparts. At the end, take the path on the right and enter the park, which you must cross to the left to reach Rue des Cannes. Walk down this street to the right, then keep to the right onto Rue du Morbief, and reach Rue des Tanneurs.

(14) Turn left onto this street. At the end, first turn left then right onto Rue de la Saline. Then keep to the right onto Allée des Romains. Just as the path turns into a narrow lane, note the ex-voto on the right, then continue straight ahead until you reach the Luxeuil-les-Bains thermal baths.

(15) Enter the spa grounds and walk around the building, staying on the path that runs closest to it. Once you have walked all the way round the grounds and the building, exit onto Rue des Thermes.

(15) Turn right towards the casino. When you reach it, turn left onto Rue de la Saline. At the end of the street, turn left onto Avenue Labienus and walk past the Mercure Hotel.

(16) At the end of the hotel, continue right onto Rue du Haut Bourey. At the end, keep right onto Rue Camille Saint-Saëns. After passing the field on the right, head straight ahead onto Rue Jules Massenet. At the end, go down Rue du Maréchal Leclerc on the left. When you reach Rue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny, turn right, then cross the road and turn left to reach the Chapelle du Messier.

(17) Return to Rue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny and continue to the right. At the park, before the bend, cross the park and, upon reaching Rue Anatole France, turn left onto it. At the junction, continue to the right and reach the railway bridge.

(18) Cross the bridge, then, at the junction, turn right onto Avenue Guynemer. When you come within sight of the Notre-Dame des Ailes Military Chapel, turn left towards it.

(19) At the chapel, take Rue du Lieutenant-Colonel Papin on the left. At the end, turn right and follow Rue des Écoles. At the end of this street, turn left onto Avenue du Maréchal Turenne. Follow the avenue, cross the railway bridge and, at the roundabout, turn left towards the station and the car park (S/E).
