Description of the walk

This circular route starts at the free car park at the Salle des Sports Théo Faller.

(S/E) Cross the bridge over the Weiss river and turn right onto Rue de la Flieh. Cross the Weiss river again and continue to Place Gouraud, which you will cross.

(1) Pass in front of Dr Schweitzer's birthplace (museum). Turn left to follow the main street, cross the Weiss again and continue straight on to the Porte Basse. In the car park, you will find a Club Vosgien "totem" indicating the various routes starting from this point.

(2) Follow the blue cross markings on the right towards Chapelle Flieger. Cross the Weiss again at the cemetery: you are now on the Schweitzer trail, which links Kaysersberg to Gunsbach, the village where the good doctor lived.

(3) Cross the D415 with caution and take the stairs leading up to the Saint-Wolfgang Chapel, which overlooks the road. Turn left to pass behind the chapel.

(4) At the crossroads, turn right and follow the blue cross towards the Flieger Chapel. Cross a forest track twice and follow the markings to the chapel. This clearing is the setting for several legends, and there are tables and benches here.

(5) Continue straight ahead and slightly to the right to follow the Chemin de la Crête marked with a yellow cross. After a short but steep climb, the slope levels out. Continue along this path until you reach an intersection.

(6) Turn right towards Chalet Jean Weibel, which leads to a wide forest path.

(7) Follow this road to the left and keep to the yellow cross until you reach Chalet Jean Weibel, ignoring two wide paths on the left. The chalet is the highest point of our hike. Volunteers from the Club Vosgien de Kaysersberg welcome hikers there every Sunday from 1 May to the end of September.

(8) The return journey follows the Blue Triangle marked trail, which starts on the right opposite the chalet. Cut across two forest paths and reach the junction with another Green Ring marked trail.

(9) Ignore this path and continue downhill on the Blue Triangle trail. Keep going straight ahead to reach the RD145.

(10) Carefully follow the road on the left towards a roundabout.

(11) Cross at the pedestrian crossing before the roundabout, do the same for Avenue Georges Ferrenbach and reach the Salle des Sports car park (S/E).
