Description of the walk

Start from the village hall in Azay-sur-Thouet.

(S/E) Head towards the village centre to join the D949bis, passing in front of the town hall. Cross the D949bis at the roundabout and take Rue du Chemin l’Âne opposite. Walk up to the end of the street, then continue along Rue des Noues to leave the village. Carry on uphill to the junction with La Tritière.

(1) Turn right, then, a few dozen metres further on, turn left.

(2) At the next junction, turn left. Carry on straight ahead and pass through the hamlet of Maison Neuve.

(3) At the next junction, take the dirt track straight ahead. Turn left as the track bends and ignore a few side paths on the right.

(4) Follow the track running alongside the field (on the right) and a hedge. At each subsequent junction, always turn left. Turn right (south) to reach a local road.

(5) Turn right and follow the road to La Draire.

(6) At this hamlet, turn right, passing between the buildings. At the next junction, head straight ahead but diagonally to the left to reach the D949 bis.

(7) Cross the departmental road and turn immediately right, then left (south) towards La Mortière.

(8) Before entering the hamlet, turn left, then left again and immediately right to follow a dirt track. At the junction of the tracks, turn left and carry on straight ahead to reach a local road.

(9) Head left and follow the local road to the next junction. There, turn right to reach the Moulin des Prés.

(10) Continue by crossing the Thouet. At the next junction, turn right, then a little further on turn left to cross the Jousselinière.

(11) At the next crossroads, head straight ahead to the left (east) onto an unpaved track. At the end of this track, turn left. Ignore the track on the right leading to La Fontenelle.

(12) At the next junction, turn right. At the Fork in the road (with a pond on the right), turn left to rejoin a tarmac road.

(13) Follow the road to the right, pass through the hamlet of Chalenton and come out onto the D949 bis.

(14) Turn right and follow the right-hand verge of the road back towards the village of Azay-sur-Thouet. Before reaching the roundabout, turn right and then, a few dozen metres further on, turn left to head down towards the village hall (S/E).

As for the tarmac, there are indeed 3.4 km at the start, most of which – 1.6 km – is a gentle climb out of the village, which isn’t particularly interesting. Then there’s about 1 km at the end. The rest is almost entirely on tracks, which are actually quite muddy at this time of year. So it’s a really lovely walk of about 12 km.
There’s only one section where you walk alongside the D 949 bis, as you can reach the point directly opposite the Route des Cudatières at point 7 by crossing straight across. However, towards the end, from point 14 to the sign marking the entrance to the village (220 m), you have to walk on the tarmac (after that, there’s a wide grassy verge on the right-hand side). It is actually (a bit) dangerous!
The section between points 12 and 13 (around Le Fuand) is virtually impassable without wellington boots; at this time of year, it’s best to take the small road from point 12 to the junction (elevation 180) and then turn right to join the D 949 bis.

There are too many tarmac sections, even though they’re on roads with very little traffic.

A walk that wasn’t particularly interesting overall in the first part; lots of roads, including two rather dangerous sections on a very busy road.
