Description of the walk

Car park at the Azay-sur-Thouet village hall

(S/E) Take the D139 towards the bridge to cross the Thouet and continue along this road.

(1) After the hamlet of Le Vieil Azay, continue for 200m and, at Le Ressac, turn right onto the path. At the next junction, continue straight ahead, going round a small pond on the right.

(2) A few dozen metres further on, turn left and continue to the Y-junction.

(3) Turn left and continue straight on, without turning right or left at any of the paths you come across.

(4) At the crossroads (granite cross on the left-hand side), continue straight on (south) until the next junction with a local road.

(5) Turn right and follow the road past La Petite Pisonnière and down to the bend. Leave the tarmac road and take the path opposite. Walk alongside the dairy on the right for a few dozen metres.

(6) On your right, you will see a sign indicating the entrance to the hedge-lined path.

(7) At the next junction, turn right to head back up towards La Pinelière. Continue straight on. This grassy path leads to a track that is passable by vehicles but unpaved. Turn right and cross the Thouet on the wooden bridge.

(8) At a place called Battreau, pass between the buildings, keeping to the right, to join the local road, which you should follow, keeping to the right. At the next junction, head left.

(9) When you reach La Pisonnière, take the second road on the right and go straight on to rejoin a country lane. When you reach the local road, turn left to reach the D949bis.

(10) Turn right and follow the verge for about 500m until you find a local road on the right leading to a bridge over the Thouet, which you should cross.

(11) Pass between the buildings that were once a mill and climb the path that joins another local road. Then turn left to return to the D949 bis. Follow the verge to the right to reach Azay-sur-Thouet. Before reaching the roundabout, take the footpath on the right and, at the end, turn left to head down towards the village hall (S/E).

The paths are often narrow, sometimes disappearing into thick vegetation, and still very muddy in places – but that’s the price you pay for this absolutely stunning and exotic hike.

Fine, but best done in dry weather... there's plenty of water in the woods!

It’s a very pleasant walk with lots of sunken paths.
However, we didn’t see the granite cross.

The only downside is the main road you have to walk along on the way back, as it’s very dangerous and there was a lot of traffic yesterday!!!!!!
Perhaps this section of road should be removed, even if it means making the route a bit longer.
But it really is a very pleasant walk. Definitely worth doing again!!!!!

It was very muddy due to the heavy rain that had fallen over the previous few days, so the walking poles came in very handy. But that’s part of the charm of hiking.
A pleasant route with little road walking. Watch out for the signposts for different routes. ..
We’ll do this hike again in a different season.
