Description of the walk

Park in the Logis car park north of the village of Retail. (Signposted on the D133).

(S/E) When you leave the car park, turn left, go down Rue du Logis de la Forêt and, just before you reach the D133, turn left at the crossroads onto Chemin des Randonneurs (signposted), which runs between the two fences of the hunting reserve (wild boar).

(1) After the pond on the left, ignore the path opposite and take the path that climbs up to the left.
Once at the top, cross the Route Forestière des Planches and continue into the forest on the path that descends opposite.

(2) Cross the small stream and climb up the steep path to exit the forest.

(3) Cross the road and head towards La Frémaudière. Walk past the farm buildings on your left and continue straight ahead on the path. After about 400 m, leave the path on the left that leads to the pond and continue straight ahead. A little further on, the path leads towards the fields. Take the path that enters the copse and joins a higher path. You will arrive at the Genaudière scrapyard.

(4) Turn left onto the road (no entry) (from here, you are on theGR®364) and turn left once you reach the D25.

(5) After 20 metres, cross the road carefully and take the path on the right. Then ignore the path on the left that leads to the hamlet of La Bodillonnière. Further on, negotiate a left-hand bend and continue along a field. After the field, turn right and then left 30 metres later onto a path that crosses a newly cleared and replanted section of forest. You will arrive at the road.

(6) Cross the road carefully and continue on the path opposite into the forest. When you reach the Route Forestière de la Reculée, cross it and continue straight ahead on a path through the forest.

(7) After 80 metres, leave theGR®364and turn left. The path descends, crosses a small stream, then climbs back up through a coniferous forest until it reaches a small road.

(8) Continue to the right, then immediately to the left at the corner of the field onto a path that leads into the forest. Cross the D25 with caution and continue on the road opposite towards Retail. Pass a picnic area on the left (single table) and a little further on, take the path on the right and continue for about 500 m.

(9) Turn left onto a grassy path bordered by fields. When you reach the road, turn right, then left at the fork before the cemetery.
Turn left and you will arrive at the Logis de la Forêt car park (S/E).

Notes

The route is marked in yellow from the cross at the start of the path marked "Chemin des Randonneurs" and in red and yellow for the section shared with theGR®364between (4) and (7).

There is a small picnic area with a single table on the Retail road, on the left after crossing the D25, between (8) and (9).

This Visorando itinerary follows the Rando en Deux-Sèvres certified route entitled "La forêt domaniale de Secondigny" ( The Secondigny National Forest), available on the Deux-Sèvres Department's hiking website.

It is not advisable to do this hike on hunting days.
To find out the hunting days in the national forest, visit the ONF website.

Worth a visit

The paths are lined with purple foxgloves, which bloom from June to September: a beautiful flower, but also poisonous. Its leaves are used in medicine as a cardiotonic. It is very easy to identify (see photo), which is fortunate, as it is best to avoid any contact with it. This plant is very toxic, containing digitalis – a powerful poison – in all its parts.
From the9 to the finish, the hedge-lined paths offer views of Fenioux and the southern slope of the Gâtine.
Off route, on the left at (3), you can reach the National Forestry Office's botanical trail 500 metres away.

This route is a variation on the one proposed by the Deux Sèvres department, which is slightly longer (11.5 km) as it includes an additional circular loop around the village of Retail (marked in yellow) at the start, allowing you to see Saint Joseph's Church (late 19th century), a wash house restored by schoolchildren, and La Pierre de Justice (believed to have been used to behead convicts).

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

The path is very muddy at this time of year. Be careful of slippery ground and stones.
Otherwise, a beautiful, bucolic walk!

At the beginning of July, we didn't see any foxgloves in bloom on this magnificent hike that takes you through the Secondigny national forest. There is practically no tarmac, just beautiful trails and the sublime landscape of Gâtine. An absolute must.

Hike taken in the opposite direction with a different route (add an extra kilometre) after crossing the "Le Gâtineau" stream. We went down the path on the left and followed the stream. We followed the paths to the road, where we turned right and, after a few metres, immediately turned right again onto the path that enters the forest.
This path runs alongside a fence that appears to be a hunting reserve (wild boar) and, as soon as possible between two fences, we turned left to climb the "Chemin des Randonneurs" and thus reach the crossroads with the"Rue du Logis de la Forêt".
We turned right to climb this "Rue du Logis de la Forêt" and thus reach the car park, where we had parked.

Our slight change of route was very pleasant, still in the forest and with the stream nearby, but very muddy and very wet. Water was running everywhere. Waterproof hiking boots are essential. It is even highly likely that it will be impassable after heavy rain, during periods of flooding.

We did this hike in mid-February. The dry season seems more appropriate to us so as not to wade through the mud.

A pleasant and invigorating route! Well-marked route with significant sections in the forest and undergrowth. No encounters, total silence.

Hello, Map and description not used much because the route turned out to be very popular with hunters. As a precaution, we changed our itinerary and took a nice little walk in and around the village. We had inaccurate information, so please let us know if there are any days during the week when there is no hunting.
We went to point 1: beautiful autumn colours, beautiful forest!

Superb hike with a wide variety of landscapes and just the right amount of elevation gain! A very "natural" atmosphere.

Beautiful hike through the forest (almost entirely on trails), very pleasant in summer. No or very few roads.
Beautiful unobstructed view upon arrival at Le Rétail.
We completed the circular in 3 hours (10 km on the clock, without extending the walk into the village) with a 5-year-old child.

The trails are very pleasant, except at point (8), where the trail has been destroyed by forestry work and has become completely inaccessible.
The Logis de la Forêt car park is huge.
There is very little tarmac and good yellow signage.

A beautiful, sheltered hike in the forest. However, there are no cultural or heritage attractions. Furthermore, the estimated time is incorrect. Without rushing (at a speed of 4 km/h), we completed the route in 2 hours.
