Description of the walk

Parking along the CR132 at the corner of Rue de Sandweiler in Schrassig.

(S/E) With the railway on your right, follow the CR 132.

(1) Turn left at the junction with Rue de Luxembourg. At thefirst intersection, turn right and then left into Huesepad.

SG markings in white star on green background (colours reversed on trees)

The tarmac road becomes a dirt track and enters the forest after the last house. At the crossroads, turn right. At the fork just after, continue left.

(2) Then turn left atthe first sunken path. Go up and continue left at the fork. Further on, ignore the path on your left with a small white marker and continue straight ahead. Go around the barrier. You will come to a car park with the Neuhausgen chapel in front of you. Make a sharp left turn. Stay on the path running alongside the guides and scouts' property.

(3) At the information board about the forest, which is only in Luxembourgish, continue straight ahead towards the large Celtic house. Walk around the reconstructions with explanatory panels in French and return to thefirst information board about the forest.

(3). Turn right and then left onto the faint path before the enclosure surrounding the sculptures.

(4) After the next information panel about the beech forest, join the path behind it and continue to the right. Further on, at the next information panel, turn left and go down to the road. Leave the marked path.

Without markings

Turn left and follow the road for 200 metres. Then take the road on your right and cross the bridge over the Birelerbaach. Head right and, at the fork, take the path on your right. Head towards the Neimillen wetland observatory. Retrace your steps and turn right at the fork.

Walk along the wetland on your right. Further on, you will see the pond where the Neimillen mill once stood.

(5) Back on a wide forest path, turn left. Join another path and continue straight ahead.

(6) At the road, turn left. Further on, ignore the path you took on the way there and continue along the road. Follow the markings again.

Markings: SG in white star on green background (colours reversed on trees)

The road becomes a dirt track. Ignore the bridge on your left and continue along the track for 1 km.

(7) After the Moulins information board, turn left towards the Millekanal. Follow it for a short while. Do not cross the canal. Turn right as soon as the Millekanal turns off. Head back up towards the houses.

At the intersection, turn left between the two properties, not on the path along the fence of the property on the left. You will come to a road and cross a residential area. At the crossroads, turn left. Towards the end of the road, look for the old small canal that brought water to the old Schrassig mill and finish by returning to the CR132 (S/E).

Waypoints

  9. S/E : km 7.4 - alt. 253 m - Intersection of CR132 and Rue de Sandweiler

Notes

Circular route called "Circuit des Moulins" (Mill Trail) but there are no more mills to see.
Signposting is sporadic, but there are sometimes signs for "Route des Moulins" to follow. The GPX track is a significant advantage.
There is only one significant climb between (2) and (3).
Muddy in places.
Picnic table at the chapel before (3).

Can be extended by the "Circuit des Sources" (Spring Trail): however, this will only add kilometres to the route, as there is nothing special to see: there are no more springs and you have to walk alongside the airport. The signposting is not ideal either. If you want to add it, follow the trail visible on OSMRandonnée -> "Quellenrundweg".
From October to December, check for hunting information.

Hello Carla,

I've just looked at your changes, they're perfect
It's never advisable to walk along a road, but it's only about 200 metres and the road isn't very busy...

Hello nolive 73,

thank you for the information about the bridge.
I have made the change in the description and on the map.
Could you take a look and confirm that it's correct?
Thank you.

A very pleasant, easy hike, done before Christmas and this afternoon.
Points of interest: the reconstruction of a Celtic village (the main house is quite impressive) and the beech forest in which the village is built.
Please note: between (4) and (5), after crossing the CR 171, the small bridge over the stream no longer exists!
Do not attempt a dangerous crossing of the stream, as a new, much sturdier bridge has been built about 150 metres to your left. It took my wife and I a while to realise this, as there are no signs to indicate it...

Thanks to Lazzerini for sharing this walk.

Hello L.Gabriella,

Where on the course was the fence located?
Do you think it has been installed permanently?
Did you notice if the markings had been changed because of this?

Thank you.

A lovely, easy walk in the forest. Beautiful autumn colours. We slightly altered the route for the last kilometre because there was a fence blocking the path indicated on Visorando.

A beautiful, easy hike that takes about two hours to complete.
The Celtic village is interesting to explore and its descriptive panels in French are fun. They feature dialogues between children, so you can play a little role-playing game if you are walking with children.
Part of the route runs alongside a small stream. The sound of the water is very pleasant.

A magnificent walk. The Celtic section is definitely worth a detour. An easy walk, with one fairly steep climb but otherwise very accessible. My daughter did it on her bike. She just needed a little help from her dad to push her up the hill and down the fairly steep descent. I really recommend it. Magnificent tall trees. Thank you to the person who created this lovely route.

Pleasant walk through the woods, interesting insight into Celtic life. Very easy route (apart from a slightly steep descent after passing the Celtic settlements).
