Route from the Saint-Macaire Fountain to Baguer Pican

Trail, half on dirt track, half on road. Beautiful sights with the Saint-Macaire (or Maker) Fountain on one side and the megalithic rock site (also known as the "Field of Tombs") on the other. Part of the trail runs along the Canal de la Banche, which joins Dol de Bretagne at Quercourt.

Description of the walk

Start from the stadium car park, Rue des Sports.

(S/E) Head north along the road, going straight on at the first junction.

(1) Turn left until you reach the copse of trees and take the path on the left. When you come out onto the road, turn left and head towards the rocks; there is no covered walkway.

(2) Retrace your steps; after 600 m on the road, take the path on the left down a steep slope.

(3) Cross the D80 with care and continue straight ahead. Cross the bridge over the Canal de la Banche.

(4) After the bridge, take the path on the left and follow it to the next bridge.

(5) Cross the bridge and the hamlet known as La Rivière to reach another bridge on the right; continue along the road then turn right onto the path running alongside the canal. Continue to the junction with the D85.

(6) Turn right for 100 m and join the road on the left. Follow it to the next junction.

(7)Turn left and follow the road up to the wayside cross at the D80. Cross over and continue to a lane on the left.

(8) Go between the small trees and enter the woodland; take the path on the left to reach the Fontaine Saint-Macaire. The fountain is on private land but can be seen from the path.

(9) Turn back and rejoin the path without going back through the lane; instead, continue through the woodland. The path turns left and joins a road.

(10) Turn right, continue up the road, pass the first junction, then turn right and return to the starting point. End of the walk. (S/E).

Notes

Car park at the sports complex on the D85.

Please note: between points 4 and 5, the path may be flooded; this happens quite frequently after heavy rain. In this case, take the adjacent fields – there will be a few streams to cross! A bit of a workout! If you’d prefer an easier route, you can also take the road through the marsh (not the main road), which goes round the area – it’s a slight detour but you’ll keep your feet dry.

Worth a visit

Don’t miss the Fontaine Saint-Macaire and the rocks of the megalithic site and its history (information panel). Please note that the fountain is partly situated on private land that is not accessible, but you can see it quite clearly from fairly close by.
