Route de l'Étang du Pas Gérault starting from Sains

A short, peaceful walk starting from Sains. The route passes through wooded areas, including a charming section at the start. There are usually many water birds at the Étang du Pas Gérault, especially in autumn.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the church in Sains.

Yellow markings

(S/E) Opposite the church, head towards Étang du Pas Gérault on the right via the C5, Rue du Haut Fresne.

(1) Proceed with caution at the junction with the D89 and continue straight on until the first crossroads.

(2) Take the road on the right for about 100 metres, then take the wooded path on the left which leads to a small tarmac road.

(3) Follow this road in the same direction until you reach the Étang du Pas Gérault.

(4) Take the path on the left to go around the pond. When you reach the south-western end, turn left onto the path which joins a farm track after about 150 metres.

(5) Turn right onto this track, then right again at the junction. The path climbs slightly and veers to the right before joining a road.

(6) Turn right onto this road. At a place called Pas Gérault, turn right again, pass the farm and continue to the T-junction.

(7) Turn right to return to the pond at the fork you passed earlier.

(4) Continue straight ahead, then turn left to rejoin the road you took on the way there.

(3) Continue along the road on the left and negotiate the right-hand bend.

(8) At the edge of the woods, turn left and take the path that runs along the edge. After about 400 metres, the path enters the woods and descends towards the Chardrain stream, which you follow until you come out into a meadow.

(9) Then turn right and climb the embankment to find a farm track to follow to the right. Join the D89.

(10) Cross it carefully, take the path opposite and turn right at the nearby crossroads. Cross the hamlet of Chardrain, staying on the road, and pass the wash house.

(11) Take the path on the left through the woods, arrive at the bridge and cross it.

(12) Turn right onto the path at the end of the bridge, walk alongside a first pond then a second one and come out onto a road at a place called l'Étang.

(13) Take the road on the right which gradually climbs, pass Clos de Giffard and reach the church square. First turn right then left to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Toilets at the Town Hall on the north-east side.
Risk of slippery ground halfway along the Ruisseau du Chartrain stream.
The return journey from the hamlet of l'Étang (13) to the village follows a winding road: drivers have little distance to anticipate, so caution is advised.
