Haute Loge route on the Passeurs trail

A fun hiking trail where around forty very diverse works produced during previous biennials remain in place. From the start, the ascent runs alongside the Grand Goutte stream and leads to stubble fields halfway along the route, offering a 360° view of breathtaking horizons. We reach the highest point at an altitude of 933 metres. The descent is just as interesting, with many surprises along the way.

Description of the walk

To get to the starting point in Saulcy, head towards Quieux (Pont de Salm, Le Haut Pré) and follow the road for just over 3 km. On this route, you will see a highly visible wooden sculpture of a jockey on a racehorse on your right: you are on the right track. The starting point is a little further on, where you will see an information sign (Radier de Barfontaine). There is space to park several vehicles.

(S/E) Follow the blue sign for "Accès Haute Loge" to the start of the hike. After the information sign, follow the partially cobbled path uphill. The route follows the path lined alternately with white rectangles on the tree trunks on the left and right. You will reach the Route forestière des Hautes Chaumes at a crossroads.

(1) Take the path opposite, indicated by the blue sign for "sentier des Passeurs." Pass under three triangular wooden arches: blue triangle and yellow rectangle markings. This small path crosses an area of stubble. Pass under the same arches again before reaching a crossroads.

(2) Turn left: signpost for "Haute Loge-Moussey, Marcairie-Prayé". After about 100 metres, follow the path on the right: on the right, you will see a wooden locomotive, an imaginary trace of a line marking the former border. Continue to the next crossroads.

(3) Take the path on the left towards Haute Loge and walk for about 300 metres before turning onto a path on the right, marked with a red triangle, which leads to the highest point: panoramic view. A circular stone shelter with a blue roof is provided for hikers, with two orientation tables set up by the Club Vosgien.

(4) Descend via the path heading south-west to rejoin the path you left earlier.

(5) Turn right and follow the signs for Moussey, marked with a red cross.

(6) Leave the forest path and turn left to descend the path towards Moussey. On the descent, you will see a blue fish sculpture carved into three tree trunks: marked with a red cross and blue easel. You will come to another forest path.

(7) Follow this path downhill, keeping in the same direction.

(8) Leave the path and take a trail on the left: it is not very obvious, but a small blue symbol on a tree trunk shows that you are on the right track. Join the Route Forestière de la Côte des Chênes.

(9) Turn left: look for the blue diamond and blue easel markings. For about 50 metres, you will find poems to read on the left-hand side of the path. Take your time to discover a few verses of poetry. Continue on to return to the information board and the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Before arriving at the start, on your right, there is a wooden sculpture representing a jockey on a racehorse.

(2) Also worth seeing is the monument to the Passeurs, located on the right about 500 metres away. Head towards La Chatte Pendue and then retrace your steps.

Finding the start isn’t easy; even with the app, we had a few problems. The start of the walk was quite tricky because of forestry work that has really eroded the path leading up to point 1 – be careful, the stones are very slippery. We didn’t see all the artworks – we must have missed them, as we were too busy watching where we put our old legs. Reaching the summit offers a magnificent view, which makes us forget the short climb in the blazing sun. At point 8, we nearly missed the descent, which is, I must say, quite steep. I’d say it requires quite a bit of care; good shoes and walking poles will make this hike easier.
