Description of the walk

Park at the Salle des Fêtes Théodore Gérard.

(S/E) With your back to the Salle des Fêtes, follow the Loire embankment then Boulevard Voltaire to the suspension bridge.

(1) Cross the bridge over the Loire to reach Île de Caqueret. Turn right immediately after the bridge. After about a hundred metres, turn right onto a track.

(2) Leave this track and take the first path on the left. Keep going straight on at the various junctions. Walk alongside a pond on your left. Shortly afterwards, rejoin the track and follow it to the left.

(3) Continue along the track to its end. If the Loire isn’t too high, you can carefully walk out onto the concrete embankment. There’s a beautiful view of the confluence with the Aron and the Canal du Nivernais, the needle dam and the hydroelectric power station.

(4) Head back the way you came.

(3) Before the pond, take the path on the left which runs as close as possible to the Loire. At a junction, turn left and immediately take a path on the left to stay along the riverbank.

(2) Follow the track on the left that you took on the way there. Cross the bridge to cross the Loire again.

(1) As you leave the bridge, take the first street on the right. At the T-junction, turn right onto Avenue du Gué du Loup, following the water collection wells on the left and then the Loire on the right.

(5) Turn left with the road and pass the pumping station. Head towards the town, ignoring the turn-offs on the right.

(6) At the crossroads, turn left onto Rue du 19 mars 1962. Continue along Rue Madeleine, then turn left into Rue M. Monnot.

(7) Turn left onto Rue Lakanal. At the end, first turn left then right at the corner by the school. Walk past the secondary school and past the porch of Saint-Aré Church. Follow Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau on the left. At the end, first turn right then left onto Rue du Maréchal Foch.

(1) At the end, turn right onto Boulevard Voltaire. When the road bends to the right, turn left onto the Loire embankment. Continue straight on to reach the Salle des Fêtes (S/E).

Worth a visit

Beautiful views of the Loire, panoramic views of the confluence and hydroelectric dam, the old town of Decize (Romanesque Church of Saint-Aré – Porte du Marquis d’Ancre...)
Very modern port nearby.

An easy walk on flat terrain; the most interesting part is the confluence of the Loire and the Toueur; you can extend the route along the Loire embankment, joining the Loire side canal via the well-maintained river port at Decize

Despite the rather gloomy weather, this stroll past the fountains, gours and the banks of the Loire is very pleasant.
Whilst we’ll have to come back in another season for the flora, as for the fauna, what a wealth of wildlife! (nutria, ducks, herons, swans, etc., and as a bonus, the passage of hundreds of cranes in the middle of their migration).
Well worth a visit – and a return visit!

A lovely circular route around Decize.
We’ve been visiting this slightly old-fashioned little town for years, but we find it has a very special charm...

Just as lockdown restrictions began to ease in early May 2021, the weather was a bit mixed, but despite the proximity to the city, there weren’t many people around.
Nevertheless, the route was easy and there were enough points of interest to make for a pleasant walk.
