Description of the walk

Park in the large car park at the Kembs community hall.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the cycle path for about 100 metres heading north. With your back to the Espace Rhénan media library, leave the cycle path to the right, crossing the D468 (take care). Follow the unpaved country lane to the end. When you reach a farm, turn right onto the tarmac road Mittelweg until you reach the small car park with crushed limestone.

(1) Pass between the boulders and head left up the crushed limestone cycle path towards the north, following the Huningue Canal for about 1 km until you reach the first houses of the Roman settlement of Cambete.

(2). Continue straight on towards the marina, which you can already see. At the marina there are picnic areas, signposts for cycle routes, a restaurant and a campsite.

(3) Cross the small bridge (a former lift bridge) then turn right towards the south onto the path known as the Rheinweg, and continue straight ahead. You are now on a shared path (cycles, pedestrians, cars). After just over 1 km, a small bridge over a stream (the Augraben) is on the left.

(4) Continue straight on along the Rheinweg towards the Knopf Mill, now known as the Ferme du Moulin.

(5) At the mill, continue along this shared path until you reach the internationally renowned company Barrisol.

(6) Cross Rue du Moulin (take care) to join the cycle path opposite. At the small lock, which is no longer in use, turn right. You are now back on the crushed limestone cycle path. Go under the bridge and continue to the next small car park on your left.

(7) Leave the cycle path and take the country lane on your right. Take the next unpaved country lane on your left and continue along this path until you reach the first houses. To do this, cross a small copse and pass by a bunker. On your right is a small farm called Chalet des 4 As.
After this chalet, there is a 5% gradient for 50 metres, at the end of which you cross Rue des Faisans (cross next to a holly bush). On your right is the Schaefferhof restaurant, a historic establishment in the commune of Kembs. In the distance, you can see the iconic water tower.

(8) Turn right as you cross Rue du Rhin (pedestrian crossing before the roundabout). Head right and then turn left onto Chemin des Pêcheurs. At number 23, turn right into Rue des Pâquerettes and follow the tarmac cycle path back to the starting point at the community hall (S/E).

The route is well signposted by the town of Kembs, but there are a few key locations without signage

Car park at start closed, but we pushed on. Pleasant route at this time of year, but avoid in direct sunlight. Not many good viewpoints.

An afternoon tour with a group of 20 senior citizens
Pleasant and fun with the new signs
This route is likely to be very busy at the weekend
especially on the cycle path
but we didn't have to worry about that on a Wednesday AM.
Lovely walk

A half-day tour in pleasant surroundings on paths that are very practicable even by bike.
Possible problems of cohabitation with cyclists on busier days.
Accessible to PRMs given the lack of gradients and the nature of the surfaces.
