Cime des Lauses and tour of the Lacs des Millefonts

Starting from the Millefonts car park, this hike will take you via Lac Petit to Cime des Lauses, a peak offering exceptional views of the Mercantour.

After a section off the marked trail along the Têtes des Margès and Barn ridges, you will reach Col du Barn and descend to the other beautiful lakes of Millefonts: Lac Gros (slightly heart-shaped) and Lac Long (entirely colonised by aquatic plants).

Description of the walk

Park at the Millefonts car park at the end of the road of the same name, which you take from Saint-Dalmas (Valdeblore).

No markings

(S/E) From the car park, climb the embankment to take the path that climbs northwards into the valley.
At a flat section, you will join theGR®52, which arrives from the right.

Red and white markings

Continue on the left, following the GR®. The slope becomes steeper and, a few minutes later, you will arrive at the Col de Veillos (marker no. 83) with a beautiful view of the Vallon des Millefonts and, in the distance at the end of the ridge, the Cime des Lauses.

Yellow markings

(1) Continue opposite on the path that descends on the other side of the pass towards Col Ferrière and Lacs des Millefonts.
After a short climb above the Vallon des Millefonts, you will arrive at the first lake, Lac Petit.

(2) Cross the small stone bridge at the lake's spillway and climb the small hill on the left to join a path that leads away from the lake and quickly gains altitude in a north-westerly direction.

There are very few markings in this area of meadows.

After a flat section, cross a small stream and continue climbing on the other side of the valley, following a few cairns. Then turn left into a corridor leading to the foot of the pass. Continue to the right to reach Col Ferrière (marker 262).

No markings

(3) From Col Ferrière, the ascent to Cime des Lauses is made by heading due west on a grassy slope. Follow the few tracks and climb the switchbacks to the ridge, which offers a breathtaking view of the Tinée valley and Mont Mounier in the distance.

Then turn right to reach the summit, marked by a large cairn.

(4) After a well-deserved break to enjoy the view of the Mercantour... retrace your steps to return to Col Ferrière.

(3) Continue straight ahead, heading east, climbing the ridge towards Brec du Col Ferrière. Pass through the middle of this relatively flat summit and descend towards a small pass marked 2458 m on the IGN map.
Then climb straight up, following the ridge path towards Tête des Margès.

If you miss the path that leads directly to the summit (as I did), pass a rocky outcrop above the main path and climb around it on the right to reach a first summit marked by a cairn. Then head for the second summit to the north-east for a panoramic view of the Vallon de Mollières and the border peaks of the Vésubie.

(5) Continue along the ridge path, descending towards a new pass (altitude 2,496 m) and climb back up towards the Tête du Barn, which offers a beautiful view of the Lac du Barn and the Caïre Archas.
Then descend the grassy slope towards the south to reach the path that leads to the Col du Barn (marker 84).

Red and white markings

(6) From the pass, descend to the right on theGR®52towards the Lacs des Millefonts.
Pass Lac Gros (slightly heart-shaped) and then Lac Long (colonised by aquatic plants).
Continue along this marked trail through a rocky landscape to Col de Veillos.

(1) Descend on the left to return via the same route as on the way up to the Millefonts car park (S/E).

Notes

99% of this hike is outside the Mercantour National Park. You may encounter hikers accompanied by dogs.

There are also flocks of sheep with their patous (sheepdogs).

Please note that at times the trail is poorly marked above Lac Petit (2) towards Col Ferrière (3).

From Col Ferrière (3) to Col du Barn (5), most of the route is off-trail, but it is easy to find your way.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

This hike offers exceptional views from the Cime des Lauses, along a pretty ridge between the Vallon de Mollières with the border peaks in the background on one side, and the Vallon des Millefonts and its meadows on the other.

You will pass by three beautiful mountain lakes, each one different.

Nearby, you can enjoy summer tobogganing and a giant zip line at La Colmiane.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

We did the hike in beautiful sunshine. The car park was full, but not many people chose this route. The climb to the summit of Les Lauses is not signposted and is quite physically demanding. The path at Tête des Margès is not well marked and we also took a wrong turn. The highlight of the hike is the 360-degree view from the summit of Lauses, as well as Lac Gros and its beautiful green colour. We heard marmots but couldn't see any. In any case, it was a beautiful hike!

Busy route at the start but a very beautiful hike. Be careful of your head, as we saw a viper in the rocks.

A very pleasant hike. We did it on a Sunday in August, and it was quite busy at the start of the route; but as soon as you turn left at Lac Petit, there's no one around, which is wonderful!
Be careful because the entire route is in the sun! Even if it's cool, a hat is still a must.
A very pleasant hike. The only difficulty is that the climb is not marked and goes straight up. You can zigzag your way up if you prefer.
The scenery throughout the hike is magnificent!

I wasn't familiar with this side of the Millefonts lake area. It offers truly beautiful views of the Mollières valley and the red earth above Isola 2000 (from Tête Mercière to the peaks of Tavels and Malinvern). The summit of Lauses (a challenging climb...) and Tête des Margès are well worth the hike, which I much preferred to the Pépoiri crossing. One surprise: the upper lake (Lac Gros according to IGN) was dry!

A very popular route, except for the section leading up to the Cime des Lauses. Magnificent 360-degree views.
Please note that there is no clearly marked path on this section, but cairns will help you reach the summit. It is uphill but neither technical nor difficult.

The summit of Les Lauses does not pose any technical problems. It is steep. It is best to stick to the grassy section.
There are lots of cairns. The view is sublime.
The rest of the route to Col Barn is easy. Be sure to take the detour via Tête des Margès and Tête du Barn for the view.

Due to a flock of sheep and their sheepdogs (4), we did the route in reverse: Barn Pass, Crêtes, Mercière Pass and Ferrière. The climb to the top of Les Lauses is quite steep, but the effort is rewarded by the magnificent view at the summit.
We descended via the rather busy Petit Lake and returned to the very busy parish-specific to Brittany car park.

A very pleasant hike, off the beaten track, with superb views. Orientation is no problem, as most of the route is on trails and for the rest you just need to follow the ridge. I recommend the Tête des Margès for lunch, with a beautiful view.
