Description of the walk

From Saint-Dalmas, take the Route de Millefonts. A car park at the end of the road can accommodate a large number of vehicles for the start of this hike.

(S/E) Head to the north-eastern part of the car park where the Sentier du Gros Vallon begins. Continue along this path, which climbs steadily; it sometimes splits into several branches, but all paths lead to the Col de Veillos. You will reach a junction.

Red and white markings

(1) Continue to the left, following the GR®. The slope becomes steeper and, a few minutes later, you will reach the Col de Veillos (marker no. 83), with a beautiful view of the Vallon des Millefonts and, in the distance at the end of the ridge, the Cime des Lauses.

Yellow markings

(2) Continue straight ahead on the path that descends on the other side of the pass towards Col Ferrière and the Millefonts Lakes.
After a short climb above the Vallon des Millefonts, you’ll reach the first lake, Lac Petit.

(3) Cross the small stone bridge at the lake’s spillway and climb the small hill to the left to join a path that leads away from the lake and quickly gains altitude heading north-west. Markings are very scarce in this area of meadows. Continue to Col Ferrière.

(4) Continue due east, climbing up the ridge towards the Brec du Col Ferrière. Pass through the centre of this relatively flat summit and descend towards a small pass, elevation 2458 on the IGN map. Then climb straight up, following the ridge path towards the Tête des Margès.

(5) Continue along the ridge path, descending towards a new pass at 2496m, then climb up towards the Tête du Barn, which offers a lovely view of Lac du Barn and the Caïre Archas. Then descend the grassy slope southwards to join the path leading to the Col du Barn (marker 84).

Red and white markings

(6) Descend to the right onto the GR®52 towards the Lacs des Millefonts. Reach Lac Gros.

(7) It is slightly heart-shaped. Continue on to Lac Long.

(8) It is overgrown with aquatic plants. Continue on to the Col de Veillos.
Continue along this marked trail through a rocky landscape to the Col de Veillos, which you passed on the way out.

(2) Descend to the left, then left again onto the GR®. Return to the car park (S/E) via the reverse route of the outward journey.

There’s a lovely view from the ridge between the Ferrière and Barn passes.
For the return journey, it’s more interesting to go via the Lac Rond and Lac Petit

As described, there are plenty of unmarked sections, but if you follow the route on the app, you’ll find your way without too much trouble. Personally, I found the section over the Col Ferrière to be long and not particularly rewarding, unless you’re keen on covering a lot of elevation gain and distance. If I were to do it again, I’d simply walk around the lakes!
