(S) From the upper part of the village of Sauto, on ‘Camí Nou’ street – which you reach from Llar – continue westwards along the yellow-marked trail. Follow this pleasant old mule track, which winds along the hillside offering beautiful views, for about 1.5 km until you reach a junction marked by a sign for the Chemin Vauban.
(1) Turn right onto a small road leading to Pla de l’Ous.
(2) Turn right, walk alongside the reservoir and, a few metres further on, turn right again. Stay on this path at all times and ignore any side paths you come across. Further on, a series of winding ascents leads to the D118.
(3) Cross the road carefully and continue straight ahead until you reach a sign for the Chemin Vauban. Carry on straight ahead and take Rue de la Poste on the right until you reach the end of the street. At the junction, turn left into Rue Coradou. At the next junction, turn left into Rue de la Fontaine, then carry on to the next street and continue straight ahead into Rue du Carcanet. This leads onto the Camí Real.
(4) Follow the Camí Real to the right, heading due north, ignoring all junctions. At the end of the street, by the bus depot, turn left and continue along the path. Carry on to the next junction.
(5) Carry on straight ahead along the straight path which crosses this vast open space and leads to the La Quillane ski resort.
(6) Carry on straight ahead, passing through the facilities of the La Quillane ski resort. This section is impassable whilst the resort is open in winter. Then continue along the piste until you reach a junction where a path begins on the left.
(7) Head downhill to the left towards the pass you’re aiming for, staying on this wide open space which leads to a Vauban sign at a wooden footbridge.
(8) All that remains is to follow the path to the Col de la Quillane car park.
(9) From the pass, head west along a well-defined but unmarked path. After a few metres, at the first junction, take the path on the left. Continue to the next junction, marked by a sign indicating the Chemin Vauban.
(10) At the junction, turn right and continue along a pleasant path, which is still unmarked. Proceed to the next junction.
(11) Carry on straight ahead, taking the path that leads downhill. Barely marked and still unmarked, it crosses a stream before joining a road where there is a sign for the Chemin Vauban.
(12) Turn right, then cross the D32 with the utmost care (dangerous crossing). Take the path straight ahead. Pass a mountain hut and a fence, then begin a descent through the woodland towards Lac de Matemale. Before reaching the lake, you’ll come to a junction, still on an unmarked path.
(13) Take the path on the left and continue the descent until you reach the Lac de Matemale track.
(14) Follow the track to the left which runs alongside the lake until you reach a junction where you’ll find the red and yellow markings of the GRP® du Capcir.
(15) Turn right towards the lake’s leisure centre and follow the GRP® du Capcir until you reach another junction, where there is a sign for the Chemin Vauban.
(16) Take the path on the right, which climbs slightly and passes through pleasant woodland before reaching the lakeside. Follow the red and yellow markings of the Capcir GRP® until you reach a signpost, where you’ll also find a sign for the Chemin Vauban.
(17) Leave the GRP® and continue straight on along the yellow-marked path, indicated by the sign for the ‘Petite boucle de la Matte’. Stay on this route until you rejoin the red and yellow markings of the GRP® at a car park. Continue along the GRP® until you reach another junction with a sign for the Chemin Vauban at the dam’s embankment.
(18) Carry on straight ahead along the GRP® until you reach another sign for ‘Chemin Vauban’.
(19) Walk past the campsite, then take the path that runs parallel to the D52 through the Forêt de la Matte. Further on, cross the road carefully and carry on until you reach another sign for the Chemin Vauban.
(20) Turn right and follow the GRP® until you reach Matemale and the D52.
(21) From the junction of the D52 with the Capcir GRP®, follow the red and yellow markings heading east. At the first junction, turn left, then take the second street on the right to walk past Saint-Pierre Church. Ignore the next junction, then, at the following one, turn left into Rue de la Mouline, staying on the Capcir GRP® route. Walk past the cheese shop and continue along this road until you reach a crossroads.
(22) Turn right to cross the Pont des Molines, which spans the River Aude. Continue along the GRP® du Capcir, which winds through the woodland until it meets the Chemin Vauban.
(23) Leave the GRP® and turn left onto the Chemin Vauban towards the Tour de Creu. After visiting the Tour de Creu and reading the information boards on site, begin a fairly steep descent to a forest track. Take this track to the left and continue to the next junction.
(24) Carry on straight ahead along the Chemin Vauban. The track becomes a small tarmac road and leads to a new signpost indicating the Chemin Vauban.
(25) Carry on along this same road. Cross the first junction and continue straight on until you reach the D118. Head towards the town hall on the right (E).
