Chemin des Puechs en Assou, starting from Fauch

The Chemin des Puechs en Assou will take you through the village of Fauch before heading out into the countryside. Legend has it that Fauch owes its origins to a secondary Roman road that linked the Albi lowlands to the mountains. It has a turbulent past due to its former status as a stronghold. It was the scene of civil wars in the late 16th century and sieges between 1621 and 1653.

Description of the walk

Park in the square in front of Fauch Town Hall.

(S/E) Join the D13 (Route d'Albi) then turn left, where you will find the sign describing the walk. Follow the path on the right which descends through the fields to join the D41 at a place called La Janade.

(2) Turn right towards Les Fontariès, and continue along this wide path to reach Massaliés.

(3) Turn left and head for the hamlet of Grèzes.

(4) Cross Grèzes following the signposts and take the road on the left towards Cournillou, then the paths through Lestivié.

(5) Before a restored farmhouse, take a dirt track on the left which leads to the hamlet of Lestivié. Then take the road on the left to join the D74.

(6) Turn right onto the D74, passing the Auberge du Lac where you can start the walk; parking is available here. Continue carefully along the D74 towards Albi to reach the Moulin Vieux.

(7) Leave the D74 and turn right onto a dirt track leading to Masplo.

(8) Turn right onto a road, then a track heading towards Capoulun. Continue straight ahead, cross the bridge over the stream and keep heading south-east. Arrive near Bouyssou.

I find there’s a lot of tarmac, especially on the fairly busy road where cars drive fast

A rather uninteresting route – one of the worst we’ve done so far.

A lovely walk to do in spring. The difficulty is rated as moderate but is suitable for children aged around ten who are used to walking. There’s a fair amount of elevation gain. The path is very well signposted. Only the section along the main road isn’t great, but it’s quite short.

You mention that caution is advised on the section of the D74 road.
I drove this route yesterday afternoon. I can only confirm that this section is extremely dangerous. On this long straight stretch, vehicles are driving at significantly excessive speeds.
I’m not sure I’d do this walk again with children.
This one stretch of the route spoils this lovely walk a bit.

A pleasant and well-researched route. The estimated duration is excessive, as the walk took 4 hours, including breaks.
