Chateau Queyras - Montbardon

This is the first stage of the tour and is an adaptation as the route is not on theGR®58, but it allows you to visit the castle that dominates the Guil pass.

(Please note) The Montbardon stopover lodge (Le Cadran Solaire) has been closed since 2018, so the best option from Château Queyras is to go directly to Ceillac via the Col Fromage.
(Important note): See this website mentioning the reopening of this lodge for summer 2023.

(1) Continue south on theGR® to the Fontaine Rouge crossroads (altitude 2125m).

(2) Then turn right at 180°, leaving theGR®58to take theGRP® du Tour de la Dent de Ratier. This path through the woods is almost flat and leads to the Bergerie de la Sommette (red and yellow sign and markings).

(Please note) Due to the closure of the Cadran Solaire lodge in Montbardon, continue south on theGR®5. Reach the Col Fromage and begin the descent to Ceillac via theGR®5and then theGR®558 from the hamlet of Villard.

Worth a visit

At Château Queyras, the fort overlooking the valley is worth a visit. It was in this castle that some scenes from the film Le Hussard sur le Toit were shot.
Above, the Bucher summit dominates the valley and is a strategic point that covers the valley with its multiple transmitters (radio, television and, above all, mobile telephony).

Fort Queyras is open to visitors from 1 May to 5 November. For more information, click here.
You will be charged a reduced rate of €10 instead of €13 for the visit to the fort if you show the information sheet for this hike.

A very beautiful hike... A stage to warm up...
The arrival in Montbardon is very peaceful and pleasant. A warm welcome in the village.
No shops... A beautiful fountain with tables for eating...
