Lake Roue from Fort Queyras

A lovely walk to Lac de Roue, mainly through woodland on tracks and forest paths. The return journey from the lake to Fort Queyras follows partly the access track to the lake and partly the unshaded tarmac road leading to Souliers. A picnic by the lake is possible, and the walk can be combined with a visit to the fort.

Description of the walk

Park at Fort Queyras. A car park is available at the entrance to the village but fills up quite quickly.

(S/E) Walk back down the road for 250 m, taking care with traffic. You’ll soon reach theGR®5junction at the start of the bend.

(1) Turn right to begin the climb, following the red and white markings, to reach the Arbourets junction in the woods.

(2) Continue along theGR® to reach Lac de Roue and its recreational area.

(3) Leave theGR® here, turn right and walk along the lake, then take the wide forest track. Reach the large hamlet of Souliers. Walk around the lake on the footpath and join the forest track that descends towards Souliers.

(4) Cross the hamlet, then leave the village and head down the tarmac road to the junction at thefirst hairpin bend.

(5) Turn left onto the forest track signposted ‘Le Rouet’. Continue downhill to reach the Torrent de Péas.

(6) Cross it, then continue slightly uphill before continuing on level ground along the track. Pass the path leading to Rouet on your left, then reach a T-junction.

(7) Turn right and begin a descent via tight hairpin bends to reach the D447.

(8) Turn right onto it and join the D947. Follow it to the right, taking great care to find the Château-Queyras car park (S/E).

Magnificent circuit
The tough initial climb is well worth the effort on some of the 3,000-metre peaks.
The advantages are that you are alone and peaceful as you make the effort, without the "performers" of the high peaks. Don't tell them that, though.

A very pleasant walk, not very busy at this time of year, of course.
The scenery varies all along the way.
The village of Soulier is as authentic as ever.

Hello
All the elevation gain is at the start of the hike and it’s a steep climb, but in the shade.
You’ll soon come across some lovely views of Queyras Castle.
Then there’s a walk through some magnificent woodland. And the arrival at the lake is lovely too (no swimming as the lake is overgrown with plants)!
There are lots of people around the lake (car park), and the descent through the village of Souliers is pleasant. The village is charming and there’s a fountain to fill your water bottles.
The return journey is easy and in the shade towards the end.
