Description of the walk

Start in Barr, at the Folie Marco Museum car park; access via Rue du Docteur Sultzer.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the church. Do not go back down the access road to the car park, but stay above it, skirting the vineyards.
Walk past the Protestant Church of Saint-Martin and the Salem retirement home, then follow the Kirchberg path as it climbs through the vineyards.

(1) At a junction, turn left, following the ‘Red Ring’ signposting towards Zimmerberg (ignore the sign opposite for the Kirchberg leisure area).

(2) At the Fork in the road further down, ignore the road on the left and continue towards Zimmerberg, facing the distinctive Andlau Castle with its two towers, then follow the signs for Landsberg.

(3) Opposite a raised garden, turn right, following the Yellow Disc signposting towards Truttenhausen. Further on, you’ll reach the Wollblumenberg with its orientation table.

(4) At the Bannholz crossroads, carry on straight ahead, then follow a path to the right to reach the leisure area. Cross this area and, once at the road, turn left.

(5) At the Gutleutrain junction, head into the forest, continuing to follow the Yellow Disc signposting towards Truttenhausen. Further on, at a three-way junction, stay on the path on the right.

(6) At the next junction, continue straight ahead (ignore the Blue Triangle markings on either side). Follow a flat path along the edge of the forest, past meadows with views of Heiligenstein.

(7) When you reach the Truttenhausen Estate (a former abbey – now a biodynamic farm), turn left twice to follow the Blue Disc signposting towards Landsberg Castle. Pass a house on your left, and further on, leave the path to follow a track branching off to the right. At the next junction, continue straight ahead.

(8) Head up to the right at a pile of rocks (the fork isn’t obvious), along a sunken path, which then curves to the right in a circular path. You’ll reach a forest lodge; follow the path towards the castle.

(9) You’ll see Landsberg Castle. Continue following the Blue Disc markings towards the Muller Apffel junction. (Further down, ignore the Red Triangle markings to the left).

(10) You’ll reach the Sentier des Chameaux and follow the Blue Triangle markings towards Kienberg. The path follows blue-painted boundary stones.

(11) At a junction, turn left downhill, following the Red Cross markings towards the Muller Apffel crossroads. Cross a road and continue straight ahead.

(12) At the Muller Apffel crossroads, continue to follow the Red Cross markings towards Barr, via the Chemin des Sept Tournants (which is actually a straight path!).

(3) Keep following the Red Cross signposts and head down towards Barr, towards the Catholic church with the white bell tower.

(2) At the Fork in the road, turn right onto Rue de l’École, then onto Rue Neuve, a shared-use area lined with beautiful half-timbered houses. Continue along Rue des Bouchers, pass the tourist office and turn left towards the restaurant Le Brochet, then carry on along Rue du Docteur Sultzer.

(13) Head towards the Musée de la Folie Marco; enter the courtyard and make your way to the car park by crossing the museum garden (S/E).

We did the route on a Sunday, so there were quite a few people at the castle for a picnic break, but otherwise it was quiet.

A route offering varied scenery.
A few points to note, however: given that the route passes through vineyards, there is a fairly high proportion of tarmac roads (from the start to point 5 and on the return leg from point 3 to the finish). Above all, there is no shade, so it is best avoided in strong sunshine.
At point 8, ‘the path by the pile of rocks’ can no longer be used; it is signposted as ‘route altered’ and you should stay on the forest track.
A special mention for mountain bikers: there are (far too) many of them on this route, and they are to blame for the rutted paths and the increasingly frequent off-track trails!

Well done to grosmollets for the very detailed instructions for this walk. There’s no need to hesitate at any point – you just need to follow the route description.

It’s a decent route, well worth a visit – just Landsberg Castle and the Barr hills… a bit muddy in the forest towards the end of the route…
