Roquebrune Castle and Cros de Casté

This semi-urban hike takes you up the stairs of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin to the old village and its medieval castle, before reaching the Maginot fortifications of the Cros de Casté park via paths through the pine forest.

On the way down, you will pass by the enormous thousand-year-old olive tree and reach the seaside at Plage du Buse.

Throughout this walk, you will enjoy numerous views of Cap Martin, Monaco and Menton, with the sea in the background.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin SNCF train station, take the underpass to cross the railway line and go up to the right via the station path. The climb is via stairs. Cross a small street and continue via the Saint-Louis stairs.
When you reach a larger road (RD 6007), at a petrol station, turn right and follow the pavement to the pedestrian crossing opposite the Saft steps.

(1) Cross the RD 6007 and climb the Saft stairs to another road, the RD 2564. Cross again at the pedestrian crossing and continue climbing, still using the Saft stairs. At the intersection, turn left to continue climbing towards the village.

Red-white markings

Follow the main street (Rue du Château) through the village to Place William Ingram.

(2) Cross the square to find the entrance to the medieval castle (admission €5, see opening hours in the "During the hike" section) and take advantage of the visit to admire the views of the village, Cap Martin and Monaco.

Retrace your steps a few metres to take Rue Rataou, which climbs up to the left. Pass the school, cross the car park and find a path on the right-hand side of the road that descends under the pine trees. At the intersection, climb up to the right via a steep and slightly slippery path. After a few hairpin bends, you will quickly reach a road at marker 542.

No signposts

(3) Take the road to the right, pass a residential area and descend for about 200 metres to a hairpin bend at the entrance to the Cros de Casté Departmental Park.
Leave the road and enter the park, located on a former military base, following the track and then the path that leads to a bunker offering superb views of Menton and the coastline.

Then descend on the right via a path that leads to another semi-buried bunker before joining a small road.
Follow the road on the left and at the end of it, take the path that runs along the retaining wall of a residence and descends towards the Roquebrune cemetery.

Cross another road and walk straight ahead along the cemetery. Once at the bottom of the cemetery, follow the signs for "village" on the right and go down the steps on the left to reach the old village of Roquebrune at marker 533.

Red and white markings

(4) Turn left towards La Torraca and the thousand-year-old olive tree. You will reach this impressive tree after a few dozen metres. It is classified as a remarkable tree of France and is considered to be the oldest in France!

Continue straight ahead, pass a first chapel (in honour of Saint-Roch) and then, after a small meadow unexpected in this area, descend to the right following the markings to a second chapel (Chapelle de la Pausa).
Turn right again and you will reach another marker (530).

No markings

(5) Leave theGR® which descends to the left, and continue straight ahead along the Torraca path. Ignore a second staircase on the left to reach a small street.
Cross and continue straight down the stairs to a larger road (RD 2564).

Cross carefully, follow the road a few metres to the left, and continue down the steps at the bus stop. You will then arrive at the RD 6007.

(6) Turn right and stay on the pavement. Go through the roundabout and, about 200 metres further on, take the street that slopes slightly down to the left, then the Massolin staircase, which turns completely to the left.
Go down to the railway line and take the underpass to reach the coastal path (marker 7).

Turn right and then immediately left to reach the stairs leading to Buse Beach.
Then cross the beach lengthwise to go back up towards the station at the beach restaurant "Le Cabanon". (S/E)

This hike is not particularly difficult, except for the numerous steps and a few slightly slippery or steep sections on the trails.

Good trainers are essential.

It was the "off-season" for tourism, but the sun was shining and the panoramic view was incredible. The village is incredibly pretty and welcoming, the castle is dog-friendly (which is much appreciated), and a visit to the thousand-year-old olive tree is a must!

A beautiful, easy semi-urban hike for families.
You can picnic in the departmental park and finish with a quick swim at Buse beach.
Buse.
We did this hike in the spring and there were lots of beautiful flowers and plants.

We enjoyed this walk,
despite not being able to visit the castle because the receptionist was ill.
Beautiful views and very interesting moments.
Thank you

A lovely, slightly challenging hike, just the way I like them. I enjoyed the beautiful views of Cap Martin and Menton along the way, as well as the visit to the castle.

Hello. This looks like a very pleasant walk, which I will do in the spring when Le Corbusier's cottage is open to visitors. I have a suggestion to add another point of heritage interest: since the path runs alongside the Roquebrune cemetery, it is worth popping in to pay your respects at Le Corbusier's grave.

The explanations about the caste park are unclear and did not allow us to follow the route described. The same applies to the "unmarked" section. The colours of the route (red) blend in with those of the map (purple) and do not make it any easier to read. However, we loved it (even though we ended up walking an extra 3 km in circles).
