Heilig Hiesel Chapel, Geissfels, Dreispitze and the dam on the Bruche

This is a fairly easy walk, mainly through the forest, on the heights of Mutzig, where you can discover a few points of interest: the Heilig Hiesel chapel, the Geissfels rock, the Drei Spitze summit, and, optionally, a dam on the Bruche.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in Mutzig, Rue de Hermolsheim near the Notre-Dame de Lorette Chapel or in the surrounding area. Please respect private property, driveways, etc.

(S/E) Cross the railway line and immediately turn right onto Chemin du Heilighiesel, which climbs slightly. Just before reaching the D1420, climb a few metres to the left to discover a dolmen. Then pass under the D1420 bridge and climb the stairs to reach the Heilig Hiesel chapel (which you can visit if it is open).

(1) Continue along the path that runs alongside the railway line. Push the gate to enter a domestic animal park. You will find another gate at the park exit (remember to close these gates behind you). In the distance, you can see the Daudet rocks above Mutzig.
Continue along the path marked "destinations multiples" (multiple destinations), which still runs alongside the railway line. The trail is marked with blue crosses and yellow rings. You can hear (and see, depending on the vegetation) a dam on the Bruche river, which you can approach at the end of the route.

(2) At the first house in Gresswiller, take the path on the left marked with a red cross towards the Geissfels rock. A few steps make the climb easier.

(3) Continue uphill (still following the Red Cross markings), leaving the valley behind. The path passes through pleasant parts of the forest: small valleys... Always follow these markings and not the other small cross-country paths, and you will reach a crossroads at a place called Steingruben.

(4) Turn left (still following the Red Cross markings). After about 150 m, the path first turns right then left, leading to a junction with a wider path.

(5) Turn right onto this path, which is marked with multiple signs: red horse, red cross, green disc and blue ring. Throughout this walk, signs provide information about the different tree species. At the crossroads at Gerdurn, turn left and you will reach another crossroads at the top of Drei Spitze.

(6) To avoid descending towards Rosenwiller, turn left onto the slightly uphill path. It passes near an intersection where the Octavie-Stéphanie farm (former hotel and restaurant) is located on the left.

(7) Begin the descent to the edge of the forest opposite the vineyards.

(8) Turn left towards Altenberg and enjoy the beautiful view on the right, which may extend as far as Strasbourg Cathedral and the Black Forest. Continue downhill through the vineyard to the bench in a bend.

(9) Turn left onto the path that runs between vineyards and orchards. Turn left at the next junction and continue to the next junction.

(10) Turn right. There are often beehives in this area. Keep close to the left twice to reach the back of the chapel via a slightly wilder rocky path.

(1) Retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there and return to the car park.

This hike also offers the option of going to the dam on the Bruche via a flat path and returning:

(S/E) Take the Passage du Couvent. Go straight through the house and cross the bridge over the Bruche. Just before the bridge over the canal, turn left and go to the end of the street to go around the residences on your left. The track passes under the D1420.

(11) Turn right, follow the departmental road for a few hundred metres, then turn left along the canal to reach the dam.

(12) Enjoy the site with caution due to the current of the Bruche and, after your visit, return to the car park by retracing your steps (S/E).

Personally, I would add a little more detail in section 10. Turn right – there are often beehives in this area: OK. Keeping tightly to the left twice made me hesitate, at the three-way junction "leave the path on the left" then about 300 metres further on turn "left". After 500 metres, take the path on the right, marked by two markers on the ground, to reach the back of the chapel.
