Saint-Maurice Chapel and viewpoint from Remollon

A stunning viewpoint overlooking the Durance and all the iconic peaks and mountain ranges in the surrounding area (Ceüze, Bure, Ecrins, Morgon, Ubaye, Monges...). A route through deciduous woodland, which lets the sun through in early spring and provides shade in summer.

Description of the walk

Coming from Tallard, about 400 m after the Remollon town boundary sign, park in the small car park on the left-hand side of the road. If the car park is full, there are also parking spaces available above the waste containers.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, head up the street on the left and, at the bend, continue to the right through the housing estate until you reach the cemetery. After the cemetery, head up the very steep road to its end beneath the reservoir. See Practical Information.

(1) Pass the sign for Les Demoiselles Coiffées on your right and take the small path, which heads north-west. The path turns north and meets a cairn.

(2) Stay on the lower path and continue to the Bas Col and its signpost on the left.

(3) Head towards the Chapelle Saint-Maurice, starting on a grassy path. After about 100 m, you’ll reach the start of a narrow track.

(4) Leave the path and take the track branching off to the right, up a very steep slope, heading north-west. After a wide left-hand bend, you’ll reach a fork.

(5) Ignore the track that appears to run horizontally to the right; continue your ascent southwards until you reach a track that is more or less passable.

(6) Pass the small hut on your left and continue along the track ahead. After a few metres, a small path on the right allows you to cut through the forest and rejoin the track after its first bend. About 50 m further on, a yellow mark on two trees indicates that you should turn left.

(7) Ignore the return path ahead and take the new track that starts with a hairpin bend to the left. Follow it to the signpost for the Chapelle Saint-Maurice.

(8) Turn left onto the path leading to the chapel. After your visit, return to the signpost.

(8) Turn left towards the Belvédère de Saint Maurice. After about a hundred metres, leave the path and take the track branching off to the left, which leads to the belvédère in a few minutes.

(9) After enjoying the view, if it isn’t too windy, this is the perfect spot for a picnic. Then retrace your steps back to the signpost at the Saint-Maurice Chapel.

(8) Leave the path you took on the way up, turn left onto the track heading downhill towards the north. Follow it to the junction you passed earlier.

(7) Retrace your steps along the path you took on the way up to reach the junction near the small hut on the right.

(6) To avoid the steep slope, leave thePR® to the left. Staying on the track, further on after the hairpin bend and then the barrier where another track joins, continue straight on to a cross where you rejoin a PR®.

(10) Continue to the right, pass Combe Fère and carry on to a junction of tracks.

(11) Take the track that climbs slightly to the right and leads to the Bas Col.

(3) The return journey follows the same route as the ascent (S/E).

Notes

(1) Alternative route: on reaching the reservoir, it is possible to make a round trip to the Demoiselles Coiffées site.

Very few markings and directional signs. IGN map, GPS or Visorando app recommended.

Between (4) and (5) there is a very steep slope which I preferred to tackle on the way up.

The tracks from (6) to (3) are less tedious on the way down and allow you to avoid a descent that is too steep.

Picnic tables near the chapel. It can also be pleasant to eat at the viewpoint (9).

Worth a visit

A lovely, steep hike offering views of the Écrins mountain range and, from the chapel, a beautiful panorama of the Durance valley, Lake Serre-Ponçon and the Ceusse.

A route of moderate difficulty with two fairly steep sections. A pleasant, partly shaded trail, ideal in hot weather. Beautiful views and a stunning panorama from the summit.
