Description of the walk

Departure from the Chevenne car park, located at the end of a road leading from the village of La Chapelle-d'Abondance.

Directional signs are present at major intersections, as well as yellow arrow posts at intervals.

Without signposts

(S/E) Head towards Col d'Ubine and Chalets de Mens, continuing along the road and crossing a bridge over the Ruisseau de Chevenne. Immediately ignore a path on the left and continue straight ahead on a wide, stony alpine track.

(1) At the sign for "Chalets de Chevenne 1235 m", cross the Séchet stream on a wooden footbridge without railings and follow an alpine track uphill towards the Chalets de Mens. Further on, cross a stream at a ford and, at the fork that immediately appears, take the right-hand branch, which is less steep.

(2) Pass a sign for "Altitude 1320 m" and continue along the track to Chalets de Mens. Ford the Séchet stream and note the impressive north-east face of Mont Chauffé on your left. Follow the steep hairpin bends through the forest. As you leave the forest, the slope levels out and the Chalets de Mens come into view, as do the Dents du Midi to the south. Just before the main chalet, turn left and quickly reach a crossroads (large cross).

(3) Continue towards the Pas de la Bosse and walk alongside the main chalet on your right. Climb steadily up a wide path, half grassy, half stony. This will take you to the Chalet de la Combe au Trot. Then take a path that starts above a drinking trough, towards the Pas de la Bosse. You will reach a small pass that is not marked on the map and has no sign (barbed wire fence).

(4) Turn right and follow the fence on your left. Pass a sign marked "Altitude 1840 m" (highest point of the loop) and continue along the path towards Pas de la Bosse. After a series of short descents and ascents, descend steeply to Pas de la Bosse, at the foot of the imposing west face of the Cornettes de Bise.

Red and white markings (rare)

(5) Take thefirst trail on the right and follow theGR®®5towards Chalets de Chevenne (south). After a left turn at the foot of the ruins of a chalet (altitude 1,765 m), the slope becomes steeper and the trail winds several times. Pass the Chalets de la Cheneau and continue on a wider path for about 200 m (ignore a path branching off to the left).

(6) Then turn right onto a path that initially runs parallel to the wide track. The path then branches off and enters the forest, where it winds steeply several times. This will take you to the Chalets de Chevenne.

(7) Turn left and then right to descend an alpine track towards La Chapelle d'Abondance. You will quickly reach the Chevenne car park (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are required.

Water source at the Chalets de Mens (3) and Chalets de Chevenne (7).

The mountain pastures of Mens and La Cheneau are used in summer: when herds are present, dogs must be kept on a leash.

Detailed map recommended (at least the one accompanying this description).

Additional information off the trail:
At (4), it is possible to head west-northwest to the summit of Saix de Mens (1,868 m) for a bird's-eye view of the lake and the Chalets de Bise. Given the overgrown vegetation, you should actually leave the trail a little before the small pass without a name and its barbed wire fence and turn left onto a steep slope towards the clearly visible summit. Make your own route, staying on grassy areas as much as possible. The climb is very steep and requires sure footing, but it is short (about ten minutes). At the summit, be careful of the steep drop on the north side.

Recommendations:
The Mens and Cheneau mountain pastures are grazed by livestock: dogs must be kept on a leash at all times.
This route crosses the Cornettes de Bise nature reserve. The following are prohibited: picking or gathering plants; leaving any rubbish behind; motor vehicles; campfires; wild camping and bivouacking.

A very pleasant hike with few other hikers. Nice scenery. The climb is steady but not very technical. The descent is more technical, probably even more so when it has rained

A beautiful hike through the mountain pastures at the foot of Mont Chauffé and then the Cornettes de Bises.
The route is easy to follow.
The descent is a little steep and may be slippery in wet weather.

Easy circuit at the foot of Mont Chauffé and then the Cornettes de Bise. Not very busy. Elevation gain of around 600 m. Very steady climb. The descent is a little long but does not present any difficulties. Very beautiful scenery.

A lovely loop between Mont Chauffé and Cornettes de Bise. The route is very pleasant with a climb just the way I like it (wide path and not too steep!), in a varied landscape accompanied by the sound of cowbells. You can see ibexes when you reach the Pas de la Bosse. It took us 3½ hours with stops (we walk at a leisurely pace).
Thank you for this route, which we didn't know about.

A beautiful hike with no particular difficulties, offering stunning views of the Swiss peaks. The route runs through south-facing valleys, making this an enjoyable outing at the very end of the season.
